Default river amber derbyshire

does anyone know about the fishing on this stream?

Sheffield Trout Anglers Assoc used to rent some fishing there but pulled out in the mid 80s I believe.

It looks more of a mixed fishery than a trout water - but it looks very fishable indeed.

welcome any leads

Keith

I used to fish it a lot in the late sixties and early seventies at Higham. In those days it was a trout fishery. I never saw any other fish, except minnows, bullheads, stone loaches and the occasional stickleback. I think the restaurant/hotel at Higham Farm might be able to help you get permission to have a try. If you do have a go, try the pool below the railway bridge and then work your way upstream by climbing a fence and going under the bridge to get through to the meadows above. There is a little footbridge that marked the lower end of a very nice pool where fish would rise and kingfishers had a nest in high earth bank.

I'm sorry I can't give you up-to-date information. It would be great if this river came back as a good wild trout fishery but it isn't keepered so is unprotected...

I have often looked at the Amber, whilst driving to the Derwent. It does look very fishable, and I would think that it holds Trout. It would be worth a recce visit. Thanks Richard for the information that it was fished, but does anyone now of anyone fishing it recently?

Arrow Not just the River Amber!

I'm v.interested in knowing who owns the fishing rights on the rivers you mention - I have a half memory that the Environment Agency provide this information, they must keep a record, and I don't see why it should not be made available - I'll have a quick dig on their website, but government websites are not the friendliest ones on which to find useful info.

A bit cheeky , but if you are generally interested in brook fishing in Derbyshire you may want to also consider Ashbourne Fly Fishing Club (AFFC).

40 members strong, with fishing on River Henmore, Shirley Brook and Upper & Lower Bentley Brook.
You'll spend a lot of time hiding behind trees, crawling about (often through nettles it seems to me) , and discovering unbelievably deep holes at the roots of those trees which contain the odd huge old trout.
Easy it ain't.
the odd mayfly is regularly spotted.
The brooks are stocked on a light to zero basis depending on the stretch. (and before you chide Mr.Slaney, it's on the list of things to sort..)

There is a bit of a problem with mink though. Our keeper took 23 last season.

AFFC also have some hard to find but quite special stillwaters, which are incredibly lightly fished.

If you're interested then please PM me. End of advert !
