Default In search of wild trout

Brilliant , I have the whole of next weekend off. Got a car and a tent and nothing would please me more than to drive out of London in search of wild trout preferably in a wild river.

I was thinking Wales , but reading the posts about the Wye near Builth Wells and having spent a weekend there last year chasing very illusive (and very small) trout , I am perhaps not that keen. Although the river itself was one of the prettiest I have fished.

So kind forum memebers , any suggestions?

(It doesn't have to be Wales. )

I would still head for the Wye but you could try the Usk or Monnow, both just a short drive up from the M4 at Junction 24. You can get tickets for the Usk and Monnow from the Wye and Usk Foundation or for the Usk Town water from Jean Williams at Sweet's Tackle Shop in Usk.

You could try the southwest, have a look here:

http://www.angling2000.org.uk/

The fish will mostly be in the 8-12 inch range on most rivers down here.

Thanks Sewin Basher , not a bad suggestion , plus really enjoyed the campsite I stayed at last time. Are there more trout in the Usk or Monnow?

Exrod , those threads are brilliant, thanks , but too much choice there any suggestions.

get a few tickets for the usk and wye foundation and then if the urge takes you you can fish on the angling 2000 waters in devon and cornwall or in cumbria etc. Loads of room for investigating in wild places. Take a small rod though.

the usk is great and jean is lovely, the town water or the beats on the foundation are really good and whilst they can be challenging they will be very rewarding fishing.

If you are after wild trout and thinking of WUF waters, here would be my recommendations:
  1. The River Edw - Aberedw beat. Nice cool mountain river with some deep runs, riffles and pools. You will catch plenty of upstream nymph or dry - spiders would be good too TDA and I fished this 12 months ago and it was banging water... over 2 dozen fish between us with TDA landing a 13" pearler.
  2. The Lynfi Dulas. More lowland in character but absolutley rammed with trout - honestly!! Nothing massive but be stealthy and you'll have a memorable session.
  3. The Honddu at Lower Henllan - hard but very beautiful and wild.
If you fancy the Monnow PM me - too much detail

Go for the Monnow and take up Tigermoth's offer and PM him.

The Tamar or Torridge beats (including their tributarys) on the angling2000 waters. Or do as sewinbasher says and talk to tigermoth, looking at the Monnow thread it looks like a good bet.
