My dad will be climbing ben nevis in the summer but seen as im not as much a climbing bum as he is thought i could take my fly rod along and have a cast or two. Is it close or right nest to ben nevis ? I will probably only fish for brown trout but if there is salmon there ill have a go at them. Any help about the river would be great, thanks !!

The "upper" part of the river Nevis is free to fish but to be honest I'm not sure where the region starts. Give the rod and gun shop in fort william a call and they will tell you. For climbing Ben Nevis youl probably park in or close to glen nevis and if thats tha case your in for some great fishing........ but not without some hiking. If you can stick your car in the glen nevis car park, walk to the end (where everyone will be heading) and just follow the path, the river will be on your right and from this point up is definately free, there are lots of lovely pools but youl need to climb down carefully (travel rod etc). If you follow the path for a few miles youl come to a nifty looking cable "Y" bridge over the river. This particular pool is crammed full of wee fighting fit brownies. Great sport with a 2/3wt. Bibio, black pennel with a few klinks thrown in will catch most times, just keep your flies small and youl have lots of great fun.

go into glen nevis campsite for your permit,seen a couple of guys fishing it.the water is crystal clear,i havent seen any fish in it though ,i would go up to loch lochy for a couple of hours and you dont need a permit for lochy

There is nothing in the lower Nevis apart from trout and salmon parr these days. You can get a permit from the rod and gun shop in the Garrison but it's not worth the money.


The upper Nevis is above the falls at Polldubh.

Try a 1 weight rod, you'll be into some heavy fish.

Try loch lochy at Bunarkaig.

Black don's right about a 1 weight............... with a 1/2 lb tippet!
Wouldnt bother about waiding though, no need, and where you'l be scrambling the last thing you want is a huge boot bag.
Seriously though, its great fishing for the wee broonies but exercise some caution where your clambering. some of the narrow deep pools in the bottom of the valley have been created by huge boulder falls, some of the individual rocks wouldnt fit in my living room
