convention would say very small flies, on 1lb - 2lb tippet ish.

However I have to say all my roach/rudd have come on trout lakes to 5lb tippet and size 12-14 black and peacock so who knows! Can be hard to hit the bites but good fun and lovely looking fish.

Default Flies for rudd

Every time I've been to Cheshire Fishing I have caught rudd on Klinkhammers and Black Gnat size 10 intended for trout, 5 last time up to a pound yet I only caught one small trout.
The place is heaving with them!!.
The irony is, they have a course fishery there and yet some of the best rudd are in the trout lakes !!.

No higher than a 2lb fine tippet, as they are VERY line shy!
Had them on small Black Gnat, Grey Duster etc when trout fishing.
I believe small Hares ear, gold head nymphs are good too.
Sizes: 16 or less for all these.

The biggest rudd I have ever caught on a fly, a fish of 1 1/2 lbs, took a size 16 cruncher. I have also caught them on B&P spiders, bloodworm imitations (similar to Cove's Red Diddy) and both black and olive buzzers.

I love catching good rudd, they are the most beautiful of species.

My very biggest caught on crust came from an Oxfordshire gravel pit and weighed 2lbs 12oz.

Only fished in the Summer for Rudd but a Grey Duster and 2lb tippet can get you the entire shoal on a Summer Evening, And the Big ones seem to come if you cast a few feet to the side of the main group that are rising
