Default Season river fishing

I went out fishing this morning at the River Derwent at Lintzford Bridge near where I caught my first brown trout the other week, well I did not have the same luck as then but I still enjoyed myself. When I went out this morning I started to fish at 8:00 am and I fished until about 11:30 am I tried a Grey Duster as there was fish rising and taking flies of the surface and I am sorry to say I have no other dry flies so I then went through using a snipe & purple and then a red tag which I just found out tonight that it can also be used dry and I had no joy either so I left there and tried another section further up and no joy either. When I first started out It had just started rain but the rain did not last long and then it was over cast and the sun came out but still no joy, I then moved a bit further upstream into a deeper section and put the snipe and purple back on and still no joy. What I have decided to do for the rest of the season is to stay in that area and get used to the river and then the next season move further upstream and then fish that area for that season. I have enclosed a picture of part of the area I fished this morning from Derwent AA website http://www.derwentangling.co.uk/Aeri...s/CNV00035.jpg .The club has approx 16 Miles of water to fish. By the way how do you dry out wader boots is it the same way you would when drying out you shoes after getting wet using paper to dry them out

If you're on the river and you're not quite sure where the fish are feeding, you can hedge your bets and fish the duo, ie, a big buoyant dry fly like a klinkhammer on the surface with a wet or a small bead-head nymph suspended underneath it. There are a number of ways to set this up, either by tying a dropper off the curve of the hook of the dry (AKA New Zealand style) or by putting the dry on a dropper and fishing the nymph on the point.

I never catch anything at Lintzford. Looking off the bridge, I can always see loads of fish rising, but they rarely look my way once I'm down there. It's so close to home though, I really ought to put in a bit more time and get to know it better.

FWIW, I blanked yesterday on a quick session, starting right at the top up at Eddy's Bridge where I was eaten alive by mosquitoes and midges and then dropping down to Ebchester, where I ended up getting stung by head-high nettles, slipping into the river down a muddy bank, and then, just as I'd decided to give up and call it a night, getting absolutely drenched in a quick downpour! The river was also very coloured with all the rain in the valley this week.

As for drying wading boots out, I just sling mine in the garage and hope for the best!

I can't claim to be vastly experienced in river fishing as I am only in my third season, but I don't look at water like that of the picture in the summer months. My attention is to the fast, streamy, oxygenated runs and weir pools where trout and grayling lie in the food channels and intercept passing nibbles. At the same time I can vouch for the 'Duo" and even the 'Trio'. This works really well and searches different depths. Paul Gaskell, of this forum, has a very good DVD which demonstrates it in detail. Personally, I wouldn't dwell on too short a stretch as I often find when one pool is un-productive, another further on will produce fish. Many times I have taken half a dozen fish and then moved on to another part of the river expecting to do the same, only to be disappointed. ATB, Alan.

I agree with Alan, that stretch is tough. It used to be good under the bridge 'til the g*t who owns the ginger cows dredged the river to make his underpass, which made a deep slow pool. Go upstream aways, either into the woods, or furhter up Ebchester (stocked )or Allensford (wilds) and above and fish the fast riffles. where as long the fly floats the fish will hit anything fluffy. A good day will see half a dozen small wild fish.
