Default Day ticket neat Matlock? - River or Still?

Don't suppose there is anywhere to fish near Matlock on a day ticket is there?

I am down there on business on Wednesday afternoon - thought I might have fish in the late afternoon and evening if there is a place where I can fish.

Any ideas?

There is a fair bit of day ticket water on the Derwent between Belper and Darley Dale... long time since I availed myself though so I'll leave it to current regulars to furnish you with the details.

As James says, Carsington is fishing its head off, as usual.

The Peacock water on the Wye (Bakewell-Rowsley) is one of the finest streams around, with a chance of a true wild rainbow too. Pricey for an evening session... think of it as a treat... if you can get on that is - 'High season' now (Mayfly), and rods will be like rocking horse sh!t, not to mention rediculously expensive.

Great, but you'll really need to get a boat out.

You'll definitely need a boat on Carsington as the fish are starting to move out into deeper water now and the banks will be starting to weed up.
Ask the rangers before you go out and they will put you on fish. At Carsington the fish don't show much so don't be put off if you don't see any. You will soon know if there are any fish about as they will have a go at your flies.
If it's bright, I would start with an intermediate to get down that extra 6 inches or so, otherwise start with a floater and also tackle up with a Di5, but you could be going too deep. Keep on the move and only change flies if you are over fish. An orange or sunburst blob will find fish for you, then you can catch them on nymphs. A montana works well too with a G&H sedge near dark.

Tight Lines. Wish I could join you but cannot get off work.

So I went to Carsington Water tonight. It was a bit wet and cold and a bit windy but nevertheless it was fantastic. The reservoir is very picturesque and it was fantastic to be out on the water in the rain because the rainbows were amazing.

Caught a lovely one and a half pound rainbow trout on my second cast. I have to say it was more by luck than judgement as I was looking in my bag for my Mars Bar when I got the bite but still managed to get it in the boat!

Next time I will get properly prepared with some heavier line ( I couldn't cast very far in the wind with my five weight) and I might think about another for still water fishing as my river tackle is only just good enough.

Thanks for the reccomendation - I will definatly go back! Might even go and sail as well!

Glad you had some action - shame about the weather, been a bit of a shocker today! I'm not sure if you were fishing at anchor, but if so, it can be even better drifting and exploring a bit, plus you only need to cast a short line in front of the boat. Admittedly a 7 weight does give you more power when you need it though.
