Gday All,
Well I'm new on here so I though I would start off with a little report about my day at Weston last Sunday.
I got there about 10am and decided that I would give the 5wt a go in the middle pool right by my car. I tied on a blue flash olive goldhead damsel and got my first three fish within the first hour. Which to be honest had me a bit worried as I only had four fish tickets and didn't really want to go home an hour after arriving !!
I kept on with the damsel for about another hour and a half without much luck and decided to go to the lower pool. I tried at the lower pool casting a couple of roaming fish with my damsel without any joy until when a fellow fisher was packing up after bagging his last fish and pointed out a shoal to me that he had pulled a fish out of on a mayfly.
So I took his advice and tied on a light brown and olive mayfly and put out a cast to the fish. I nailed one on my second cast and he fought like a fish possessed......I was stoked as this was my first fish on a dry fly. I fought him for about 5 mins (felt like longer) until he got off just as I was grabbing my net.....dammit !!! This proceeded to happen to me twice more aswell. Then I calmed down and managed to hook another and fought him nice and slow to tire him out and he put up a bloody good fight but I got him in the net and on the bank and right as i did so the fly popped out of his mouth......what a touch.
All in all it was a top day and I left with 4 fish ranging from 2lb to 2.3lb......not huge by any means but good size on a 5wt I reckon.
Has anyone else found that trout fight harder on a dry? I couldn't believe the difference between the one caught on a dry and the ones caught on wets.
