Default The Brick Wall?

Just been out in the field for a couple of hours this morning practicing casting with my old dryline and an old wetline. Took a measuring tape out with me and the brick wall came at 22yds.
Whatever I did i couldn't get past that line. I could keep the line in the air for ages at that distance but on my forward cast when i opened my left palm to feed some extra line to increase my distance(ie.shooting more line), the line stayed in my palm and didn't run through my fingers? It was as if it was just stuck ? there was no knots by my feet and the line was clear. Does the line need some sort of greasing (not the right term i know) the first 10 to 15 yds the line flies through the eyelets then slows down at about 20yds until it just won't feed anymore.
Any techniques I am missing ( I would love it if it's the lines fault!) but it's probably me.
rod was 9ft6. dryline 20yds, wetline 22yds (extra yds down to extra line weight i am guessing.

I would hazard a guess you have a habit I just cannot break myself of.

I let go too soon, ie. before the line is travelling straight forward away from you.

On the odd occasion when I say "don't let go" to myself and wait I get a much better "shoot".

I dont know a lot , but i do know a common mistake a lot make ( i am just about getting over it ) is on the back cast the rod is not loading , you may think it is by seeing the line out behind you BUT it is not until you feel the rod load that you should start to bring it forward . Also are you hauling the line ??
Pulling it back towards by tugging the line from first ring down to your pocket , this puts a lot or extra speed in the line and that with loading the rod = distance ..
hope that helps ..

yup hauling the line ok, just watched some vids on youtube of some distance casters. they do a lot of hauling!
very forceful hauling, 3 things you have picked up on that I can try, haul with more force, wait longer on the back cast till the rod is loaded(ie-line straight out) and don't shoot till a bit later. (I think i've got that right?)
maybe the line wasn't shooting on the last cast around 20yds because of the above?

Default Brick wall

Better to cast 22yards very well than 23 like a sack of spuds hitting the water.Halfords back to black can make some lines slicker.

You may be killing some energy by dropping the rod tip on the final stroke forward (?) - a lot of people try and put a bit extra in, and actually that can work against you. If the rod tip drops to low you kill the forward momentum, widen the loop, and it doesn't shoot.

Watch the line over your shoulder to help with load on the backcast. 22yds isn't too bad though - you'll hook most of your fish within 20yds of where you''re standing. I wouldn't be overly concerned!

Cheers

Default Loading The Rod

The intial symptoms are of a well underlined rod? which actual outfit are you using.

Might seem a dumb question but is your line loading the rod properly or vice versa are you overpowering it on the final delivery as you have quite a lot of line in the air prior to the shoot.

There is often a tendency for extra ooomph! to be injected on the final delivery which might just be the key to your conundrum. How many times have you watched a caster overdo it and "toss the caber" on the final delivery.

If your line intially flies out when loaded and then shot to 22 yds no problem maybe this is it for the combination of rod and line you are using? and putting 22yds of line in the air on this outfit will possibly never achieve your goal.

Sexy Loops website has an in depth casting clinic and a good video.Failing this your nearest fly doctor will cure all ills hopefully.

I did see an article in one of the fishing mags that one of the biggest faults is that you may be keeping your left hand{that is if you are holding the rod in your right hand}to far away from the reel try keeping your left hand about 8 inch from the reel or whatever is comfortable when you are loading the rod up hope this makes sense.

Sorry for the delay in replying, many thanks for the replys, been out in the field all afternoon , the missus has got the hump and I need a wrist transplant! thats the thing you see I just wont let go. 24.5yds max this afternoon.
Just call me a distance tart fossil-fish but I need to get to 30yds it's just something I have to do. i'm not even interested in fishing now, I think they call it obsesive compulsive or something??!
Those lines they are talking about eg. snowbee extreme distance is it all talk or will it give you that extra couple of yards?
off to hospital now via the divorce courts....

this is for -JCP - rod is a hardy marquis 9ft 6 and the reel is an old shakespeare the lines used were a 20yr old dryline and 20yr old wetline.
