Default Trout fishing in Berkshire?

Hi folks,

After a few years of allowing my duties to the angle be superceded by work, computers and other such trivial pursuits, I've set myself the goal getting back out onto the river bank this season for more than just a cursory flick of the fly!

I grew up in South Suffolk and fished extensively on the Stour around Nayland for 15 years or so. Of course, this is not prime trout country, though there were a few spots you could find them in the more out of the way tributaries, but I did enjoy plenty of fly fishing for chub, dace and other coarse species during during the fairer months as a bit of variation from the more orthodox methods.

I recently moved to Datchet (near Windsor) to be closer to work so rather feel I am in a foreign land coming from the Stour that I had come to know so intimately.

My question is, are there are spots in this part of Berkshire where I can get out to cast a fly at some trout?

For the time being, any pond, lake or reservoir would be great, but ideally in the long run I would hope to find a syndicate, or similar, that would give me access to some of the river fishing that know and love.

Any links, thoughts or advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance and tight lines!
EP

PS: Mods, I hope this is in the correct place on the forums. Please move the thread if it should be elsewhere.

They are not cheap but there are a couple of stretches of the Kennet that you can get on. The best of the two is probably Barton Court which has nice fly fishing for browns and rainbows on the main stem and carriers.

The other is a little further upstream at Lower Denford where ACW holds his grayling days and the fishing here is mostly carriers not main stem.

This is similar money to Barton Court but in my view too much where 3 out of 4 fish are very ordinary stockie rainbows of under 2lbs.

If your looking for a pond then there is one near the Thames on the edge of Maidenhead.

Can't remember the name but I have stolen a few hours there a couple of times. You come down the A4 from Slough and turn right at the roundabout just over the river then after a mile turn left and left again.

The best way to find out is to drop into Kings Fishing & Outdoor Wear just down the road. he is a coarse fishing specialist but he has the EA guide to fishing which has maps and locations for both game and course fishing.

That is Sheephouse, or as it is more appropriately known, "Shithouse".

To be fair, I have not been there for a few years but not great.

Best bet is go to Farmoor either 1, if you just like catching fish or 2, if you need a meal.

Haywards Farm is also a few junctions down the M4. Plenty of coarse fish in the Thames, too.

If you are looking for a pond there are also these:

Felix Farm - Howe Lane, Binfield, Near Bracknell, Berkshire, RG42 5QL
Telephone 0118 934 5527 or 07860 218 498
Doesn't have a current website.

Barn Elms - Dark Lane, Bradfield, Reading, Berkshire, RG7 6DF
http://www.barnelmsfishery.co.uk/index.htm

Haywards Farm - Station Road, Theale, Near Reading, Berkshire, RG7 4AS.
Telephone: 01189 323422
http://www.haywardsfarmfishery.co.uk/

Felix Farm is tricky to find as it is along an unmade track (Spinning Wheel Lane) that isn't too obvious from Howe Lane and it can sometimes be difficult (especially in the summer), but it does have a few boats that can be hired as well as bank fishing. It also does a good ticket system, where if you don't catch your limit on the ticket you purchase, you can return again for just £10 to catch the remainder.

Barn Elms is probably the nicest location, very peaceful and has a reasonable lodge, but it can be a bit easy at times. Good quality fish though.

Haywards Farm stocks good quality fish and also has a separate C&R lake, has the added advantage of having the Sport Fish store on the same site........but that can prove expensive depending on your will power........

Cheers,

Bill.

Welcome to the forum, EP and a well considered introduction it was too. I can offer no information to assist in your suggested locality but if you fancy a jaunt to the Monnow, drop me a line, you will be most welcome.
