Default South Uist

Hi Guys,

My fishing buddy and I are off to South Uist in May to have a go at the machair lochs and hopefully some of the angling club waters. While we're there we're hoping get the saltwater gear out as well.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on locations, tactics, flies etc.

Also I was wondering if anyone had a copy of "70 Lochs - A guide to Trout Fishing in South Uist" that they would like to sell. It's out of print at the moment.

Cheers

Andy

Andrew if you have a look in the destination Fly Fishing section you will see that a similar question to yours was asked and replied to a few days ago.

You could also try giving MacGillvary's shop in Balivanich a ring as they may have copies of the book you are looking for. Tel No: 01870 602525.

I'm not sure if 70 Lochs is out of print but I think it is out of date in places. Some of the lochs that get a mention as being good are almost unfishable from the bank because you are up to your nuts, or deeper, in heather. Many of the lochs that are described as ideal for duffers because they are so full of fish have never given me anything, but that might just be me...

If you are going to fish the club waters from the bank take some lengths of foam rubber pipe lagging to put over the many well maintained barbed wire fences that you will have to cross

I will PM you with a few hot (well warmish) spots that are worth a look on the club waters.

Andy

Hi' If South Uist loch fishing is as good as that of North Uist, it will be great. If you can't find the book you are after, I found a supposed out of print guide to fishing in Orkney/Shetland, several years ago by phoning Tourist Information on the island. Good luck. TC

Thanks for the advice and help!

Exerod: interesting what you say about the 70 lochs book, I'm have a ghillie for my time on the Machair lochs so I guess that's as good as it gets. But I do like to do my research. I'm used to waters like Llyn Brenig, Tal-y-llyn with the odd trip to Rutland. There's loads of advice knocking about on the web for them but the Uists seem to be a well kept secret!

Terry: Thanks I might just try the tourist information guys. The nice people at MacGillvary's are going to have a dig around in their store room to see if they have an old copy knocking about.

So what about flies? I've seen reference to various flavor of bumble which I've started to tie up. A guy I know from a fishing club swears by a Haul y Gwynt when he's up there (it's a favorite of mine fishing down here). any other suggestions welcome, I plan to have a boat load of flies when I get up there. These bushy flies are great on the top dropper, but what do people use on the rest of the cast?

Thanks again, the fishing community is always so generous.

Get yourself a load of muddlers in different sizes and colours. wee ones are deadly. for the rest a selection of wets in various sizes are good. connamara black kates pennals teal blue and silver for the sea pools. watch the drinking as a wee dram has been known to last several days . jim

Never fished either fly, but I believe Goat's Toe and Clan Chieftain are both highly regarded over on the Uists. Cheers TC
