Default Grayling on the river Wear

hi all ,

was a bit undecided where to go fishing tomorrow , either have my 1st trip to kiplin hall for my 1st bit of stillwater fishing this year , or get my new St croix avid out and try a bit of Grayling fishing on the Wear .

Anyway i normally don't target Grayling during the autumn/winter months on the Wear , reasons being they are few and between now compared to years ago .But i've decided to spend the day trying anyway .

So should i stick to deep fast runs and tails of pools ? was thinking of either fishing with czech nymphs upstream on a short line and possibly klinks upstream aswell .
Should i keep off the spiders as don't really want to bother the browns or will these still catch the nice Grayling ?

A nice Grayling like the ones in the "grayling photos" thread would make my day

I'm planning my first attempt at grayling fishing Stewy, so I'd like to hear your suggestions too. I've not been fishing for a long time, there was no such thing as Czech nymphs back then. I've read up about it now, and it doesn't really appeal to me. I like casting a flyline, flinging a leaded nymph around on 9 feet of leader sounds totally inelegant, are any of your methods a bit more like proper flyfishing?

That's a very kind offer Stewy, but I'm an unsociable *******.

Hi Sid,

Where did you fish in the end?

Sorry to hear that the grayling are not as plentiful as they once were. I fished the Wear regularly about ten years ago and there were loads then. My best three fish were all caught on a number 2 Mepps whilst spinning for seatrout.

The Tees at Egglestone (BAAC Water) used to have a good head of grayling too....
Cheers,

Davidh

hi david,

spent the afternoon on the tudhoe stretch , water was still high and slightly coloured .
hardly saw a rise all afternoon , fished czechs , klinks and spiders and had one brown to a czech nymph .

probably go out again next week and try again , i hope its just me not being able to find them rather than the population dwindling

Hi Sid,

Don't know the Tudhoe stretch - any deep pools there? Always worth a dabble with a goldhead before fishing the runs. Now the salmon season is finished the free Durham stretch is worth a bash. from the Green/carpark side, first pool after the railings is always a good bet when the river is at normal levels.

Cheers,

Davidh
