Default End of my first season of river fishing

What have I learnt ?

i) The Wye and Usk foundation is a fantastic way for a stockie basher to get access to quality wild river fishing at an afordable price.

ii) I now know where the fish are likely to be in a river even if i cant catch em.

iii) There is nothing finer than wading up to your nuts in a beautiful secluded valley with nobody else around, the peace, tranquility, the wild life, amazing

iv) Dont wade in deeper than your nuts !

v) When wading back to the shore the river often gets deeper near the bank

v) Nothing beats the excitement of casting to rising fish and seeing it take your fly.

vi) Match the hatch ? yeah whatever !, a small black klinkhammer goes a long way

vii) Wild fish aren't as easily spooked as you might think, but then again how many did i miss

Viii) Fish always take the point nymph

ix) Sportfish's green beeded shrimps are deadly

x) Gutters scare the sh*t out of me

xi) Its really nice not to have to kill fish.

xii) An 8oz wild brownie beats a fat pellet pig anyday.

xiii) Dont try and turn around in fast water

ix) Sweets tackle shop in Usk should have a preservation order stuck on it, Jean is an absolutely lovely lady, great fly tying skills

Can't wait for the next season

In the mean time back to the pellet pigs

Hang on a minute ! Grayling !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I go along with all of this, wading can be a bit too much of a thrill though! Don't turn round in fast water is a point well worth remembering. Thank god for the wading staff.

I think river fishing in all its forms takes some beating.

This is my first season fly fishing and so far I have:

1. Caught my first wild highland brownie from the beautiful Island of Mull
2. Doet battle with the hard fighting rainbows of Grafham from a boat on my own.
3. Fly fished my local river and caught specimen Dace on the dry and a few chub.
4. This weekend I caught my first fish on a nymph below Klinkhammer. A chub of about 3lb while up to my waste in water.

I'm looking forward to next year so I can have a proper go at some wild brownies on the Cumbrian rivers to make up for this years washout.

It's addictive this fly fishing lark.

Thumbs up

I have to agree with all of Tommythis points. I to have just finished my first river season. I used to fish regularly at Jubilee Lakes until Sandra sold me my first pair of waders and boots and my wife bought me a river outfit. Now I can't get enough river fishing in. I am blessed though because I live in a village with the River Swale running through it and it is stuffed with trout and grayling even more blessed because there is half a mile of parish water that I can fish free as a resident of the village Going to try my hand at grayling fishing this winter and, god willing, I will be around for next years season
Oh and I will now be heading back to Jubilee.....
