Default Fishing the drift

I'm normally a river man but I do enjoy the odd boat trip now and again.

On previous trips the windy conditions meant fishing at anchor with a team of buzzers. I felt in control, a few fish were caught and all was good.

However on the last trip there was just a light breeze and it was decided to fish the drift (first time for me) and I was hopeless! Again buzzers were my choice, my boat partner said "you're fishing those too fast!" I didn't understand, "I'm just retrieving slack line!!" I replied. Lots of fish were being caught, my frustration built, my casting went to pot and I spent more time tying new leaders than fishing!

My question is: is buzzer fishing effective whilst on the drift or would I have been better off using a different method such as wets or lures until I gain more experience?

Any advice appreciated.

TF

I've caught plenty of fish before using floating line and buzzers on the drift. You just have to try and gauge the spped of the drift and take it into account when retrieving. I look at an object on the bank to get an idea of the speed the boat is moving then try and retrieve ever so slightly faster than that to keep in touch with my flies.

Theres no reason just because you are moving, you cant fish this method.

Tight lines!

I fish Buzzers on the drift Gerald, whether under a bung or straightlining and have success on both methods.

As you said mate, you just have to keep up the slack, no more, so you appear to be doing it alright. Your mate should have seen this, unless he felt you were retrieving faster than you were drifting?

Tightlines!

I didn't think so. It was at Draycote on Friday, the competition anglers were slaying em around the bubblers. I couldn't get a pull. No idea how they were fishing.

I was there Friday mate and was no where near the boils myself, was drifting all day from about 100 yards off the middle of the dam down to rainbow corner, the water was like pea soup, still had 21 fish though, all on blobs and SS fast glass, just stroking them back. Lost loads of others as well

Had the bung and buzzers on for about half an hour and never had a touch.

Aye, thought I spotted the Pirates flag!

Looks like I had it badly wrong on the day, trouble is my boat partner thinks it's uncouth to use a sinking line!! I've got some fritz, next time out I'll give it a go when he's not looking.
