I will be going on a guided trip to a river (wading not boat) and I was wondering how much people usually tip guides? This will be for trout and grayling with all equipment provided. Thanks.

Me neither. This will be my first time. My friend told me it was a good idea to get a guide because you learn a lot about the water that you wouldn't really be able to unless you fished it regularly for a long time. Hope he was right.

it all depends on where you are going..
i was told from someone expect a gillie to turn there nose up at anything less than £60+.
others have told me some are happy with just a pint in the pub afterwords.

20% of the guide fee is a good bench point. IF you feel you got the full value of the fee, caught fish, learned a bit, were instructed well, then tip accordingly.

If the guy is on his phone talking to his buddies about last nights lay or pints later, then he's clearly not taking his job seriously and deserves nothing.

I would always tip what I was comfortable with. Having used charter boats a fair bit here and a couple of time overseas - I go with what I am comfortable with and, more importantly, what I can afford.

After all, imagine if this is your " once in a lifetime trip" and you can just afford the guide in the first place; £10 may be truly all you can afford.

A good guide would come across as very grateful for anything from a pint to a pound and upwards.

Afterall, a tip should not be a given or expected - you charge a price and THAT is your price. A gratuity is a nice wee add on.




Why is it that Guides get a tip and an Airhostess does not?
Or your GP or a brain surgeon?
Why is it a waitress expects a tip or a bell hop but not a shop assistant or the Chef who cooked you meal?



Interesting question and a can of worms perhaps but, all in all, I would say to tip whatever you want to or can afford.


Or just go with the standard 10-15%

I think it very much depends on where you are fishing. In some places like the U.S. tips are customary rather than discretionary, but if pressed for a standard rule I would say 20% for excellent service, 15% for good service and 10% for average service. Who knows though, others may have different ideas?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I like the "tip what you can afford" bit. I am a student and money is tight but I managed to get this trip on a very good deal which is why tipping came to mind since I feel like the guide probably won't be making too much off of it. Although I have no idea. So making the tip more reflective of my current financial circumstances seems like a good idea.

Can't speak to how your system works, but most/bulk of the guides here have to split their fee with a booking agent (old established guys just have to answer their telephones? ). Many of the folks you 'tip' are actually paid a minimum wage and the 'tips' are a considerable amount of their wages.

As a poor comparison you eat at a sit down restaurant you'll probably leave a tip based upon the level of service. You walk into a take-out place highly unlikely you will (tip jar siting next to the cash register or not). Personal opin here only but when I order (food) I expect that the price already includes the cost of the person who takes the order and delivers same. Everything that happens after is what a 'tip' is based upon.

As a historical side note "tips" actually stands for 'To insure prompt service' and it was paid 'up-front.' Table usually had a cup sitting in the middle and you'd drop some coins into same ..... after you'd had whatever you ordered, you'd either leave the money there ... or poor service, re-pocket.

So endeth the lesson.
