Smile Grayling fishing on the Clyde

I have just got a Universal Fishing Permit from UCAPA and wanted to try my hand at fishing for Grayling on the Clyde. Can anyone tell me the places to go and the flys to use. I have fished the Nith on a couple of ocassion for grayling and used a wee pink czech nymph size14. Is the method the same. Any information at all would be more than welcome

We Fish it very frequently and have had a bit of success with the bugs pictured below, however out of season browns can be an issue and moving around helps. I have just started using the float rod/centre pin this season so i am no expert on this aspect of the sport.

There are plenty of grayling at Abington,,Crawford and Telford bridge.
You just have to find them---and find them when they want to feed.
The catches that I know of, have come the last hour before dark.
Pink bugs are OK but try all sorts.
Ive been trying and will continue until the trout season.
Its hard going but the effort can be worth it---Peter

Hi
I think you have more clues there than anyone gave me on the Clyde when I started last year! Like Morrisdancer says keep moving until you locate them, I have only been on the Clyde once this winter and found two or three fish and they were a good size too- only managed to net one of them unfortunately. The fly thats worked for me everywhere I have used is the red tagged bug in this image :

You will find excellent grayling fishing from Motherwell upstream. You will probably fare better looking for a decent spot in the middle reaches, far from the madding crowd.

GuyFromLaw- whats the Hozier section like for Ladies. I fished it for Trout last summer and while it was quite hard wading in areas ( compared to some of the Clyde I am more familiar with) I quite fancy that for a trip sometime?

Kenny there are grayling in every suitable stretch of the Clyde. I haven't fished Hozier for grayling, only trout in the summer, but I've had grayling there, then. In fact I don't know a spot on the Clyde I've fished where I have not caught grayling whilst fishing for trout or salmon. I've had them on size 8 double ally's shrimps.

Not the best wading in anything other than clear water, unless you know it.

If I could be bothered I'd be heading out to between Boat Bridge and Carstairs.

Yes-as GFL says there are grayling throughout the Clyde system.
I have had a 44cm grayling 100yards up from Wolfclyde Bridge and another 44cm fish 100 yards down from the bridge with plenty of other good grayling in between. (hope I can mention it now, the river is closed after tomorrow)
They haven't moved away from these areas, they are still there, but you have to be on them when they are feeding.
It could just be for 15mins. in that day and its usually at last light.
Give all the known grayling spots a go, cover as many as you can and just hope that you hit them when they want to feed.
However if you are fishing maggot you could go to a known grayling area and loose feed to induce the fish to feed.
Nothing against that method-Ive done enough of it in the past but I am now fly only----Peter
