In march you don't need a long list of flies in your box on the northern rivers.
The two nymphs as above are always good to have in the box plus a few spiders waterhen ,black spider and a couple of dry flies like a dark greenwells and a grey duster.

the grey duster tied klinken style works a treat and spiders work a treat i have never fished on the eden but i guess all northern streams fish alike

Hi there,
Good advice from the guys ..these standard patterns will also catch on both Irthing and Eden....
I lived in Brampton for may years before heading north to the highlands of Scotland and know the lower Irthing well..was ghillie on the Eden at Wetheral for a good number of years too..beautiful river with quality trout ...
Anyway here we go ...
snipe & purple,
snipe & yellow,
partridge & orange,
March brown
Greenwells

Sizes in the range of 12 - 16's.
If the water is heavily peat stained use the bigger flies and smaller flies if the water is lightly stained.
Bigger flies in rising waters and smaller flies in lower water..

The Eden runs clear so adapt as necessary.
Have you fished the Gelt not an easy river to fly fish but there are some cracking trout in it and the odd salmon or two....

Wishing you every success,
john

Early season==Large Dark Olives and shrimp, go from there..

#14/16 PTN or suitable emerger / dry?

Shrimps...beadheads, etc.

Before you do your first cast carefully turn a few stones over and have a quick look and you'll be in the right direction..

if i was only allowed to fish one fly all season long it would be a size 14 pheasant tail nymph with a 2.8mm gold tungsten bead and a little touch of pink at the thorax...lethal, just lethal.
