Default Stillwater Fishing near Abergavenny??

Hi,

I am new to the forum and have recently moved down to Abergavenny. I am an experienced fly fisherman (Sewin and Wild Trout mainly) looking for somewhere to take my father-in-law fishing for Rainbows as he is a beginner learning the ropes. We have been to Ravensnest, which was OK, but not one to fish regularly.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have looked into Big Well, Fairoak, Cwm Hedd and Seven Oaks but unsure how they fish this time of year?

Any advice would be much appreciated as I don't fish stocked rainbow trout stillwaters very often!

Cheers.

Hi, just for info Fairoak is shut until March. Cwm Hedd is fishing well at the moment & has lots of room for casting, (ideal for beginers), as well as good facilities. Gwyns breakfasts highly recomended!. It is closed on mondays & tuesdays though. In the other direction you might like to try Woolaston Court Trout Lakes near Lydney. Closed at the mo but well worth a visit. I think they re-open 1st March. When the season proper starts try Wentwood, near Newport, Ynys-y-Fro, also near Newport & Llandegfedd Reservoir near Pontypool. Bit harder for beginers but good waters. Big Well is similar to Ravensnest in size but without the running water throught it. Hope this helps.
Regards,
Garry.

Cheers Gary!

I shall pop down to Cwm Hedd sometime in the next week or so to check it out, and keep the others in mind for march.

Thanks for the info and advice.

Regards,

Huw

Seven Oaks fishes well in the cold weather. The South Wales Echo
does trout and coarse fishing section every Thursday and gives a little info on how the lakes are fishing.

Huw,
If you want bigger water Usk ressie must be in easy reach of you. I have not fished it but hear it's ok.

Also with more of a run there are the Bristol Water ressies opening in March. Happy to give you information if you try them.

Cheers,
Mark
