Hi Pearse,

Going back many years we used to frequently go to a place called belturbet which is close to the border. Back then I was obsessed with coarse fishing and loved to fish the river erne and surrounding lakes for roach and bream of which it was prolific.

There are definitely wild brown trout in the erne on the upper reaches and also in other surrounding rivers.

The abundance of lakes in that area means your never going to be too far from some stillwater fly fishing.

The area is beautiful and I rarely ever saw another person fishing whilst I was there.

Mick.

It's a long river, depends exactly where you're staying. If it's around Belturbet, it's going to be mostly coarse fishing, although there's a nice bit of trout water above Kilconny Bridge. Get a day ticket in the Railway Bar in the town.

If you're near the 'Middle River' around Crossdoney, there are some good stretches but it's all wild fishing, not club controlled Just ask locally and you're OK.

The Upper River is probably best for trout, above Lough Gowna. There's about 10 -12 miles of club water, (River Erne Anglers' Club) lots of smallish wild browns but some bigger and I've had 'em up to 2 lb. Day tickets from local tackle shops eg Sports World in Cavan town.

If you're there in August you might suffer from weed although it depends on recent rainfall and water height. Good sedge hatches in the evenings and anything small and black is fine during the day.
