Visited the Suir about three/four years ago and stayed for a week in a farmhouse that had about a mile of the Suir and a stretch of the river Tar. The river ran like chocolate for four days following heavy rain but on the fifth day it started to clear and I was catching on caddis dries. It looked as if it could have been really good but the weather..................!

Enjoy yourself if you do get to visit it is very pretty.

A quick call to Andrew before you go , or a visit into his shop will set you straight & REALLY help you out.

Hi Pearse,

Where abouts are you staying? The Nire and the Tar are the tributaries you are talking about I think. If I was you I wouldn't bother with the tributaries on the Suir as there is plenty of excellent fishing on the main river.

Head up river to Holycross and and you can fish up or downstream from there. There are two different clubs so you'll need two different permits which you can get in the shop in Holycross. That'll sort out 2 days for you. Also you'll get fishing on the Golden/Cashel and the Cahir club waters. That's the Suir sorted for you.

If you're thinking of the Ghoul and the Erkina, well they're tributaries of the Nore. Go to Durrow and you can fish the Nore there as well as the Erkina which flows into the Nore at Durrow. The Ghoul a tributary of the Erkina has smashing dryfly water and some big trout and it has a massive head of trout. The Erkina also has some lovely water and great fishing from the Convent in Durrow down to where it meets the Nore. The Nore itself from Durrow down river to Ballyragget has some absolutey smashing fishing.

Where to fish, either is good? 2 days on Holycross on the Suir and maybe 2 days on the Nore/Ghoul/Erkina at Durrow now that would be a great fishing break.

Bert has pretty much covered all the bases there except if I might add when you are in the Durrow Erkina/Nore area call into the fly fishing museum which is well signposted and very close , ran by a real gentleman and one of Irelands true gems. PJ
