You want a fairly long copolymer tapered leader, a minimum of 12 feet, regardless of rod length. Use the finest diameter point that you think you can get away with.
I catch plenty of trout without greasing any part of the leader, but according to some this is heresy & obviously I've been catching all the suicidal fish.

A floating, greased leader creates lots of highly visible shiny coils near the fly, which in my opinion looks ridiculous when viewed from under water.

On the other hand, a sunk or ungreased leader creates drag which apparently kills your chances of catching, unless you're fortunate like me & all the other folk who always fish dries this way.

In other words, the jury is well & truly out!

pol put your request in the general forum, more people view it and you should get more replies. Fluorocarbon pulls all but the bushiest of flies under water so i would go with copolymer mate.

Preston Reflo Powerline seems to have a huge follwoing on the forum. I've never heard anyone saying they didn't like it. It is the only tippet I can say that for. However I haven't tried it.

I use exactly the same for my dries as my nymphs in clear water, Stroft. If you faff about changing leaders you are likely to miss a short rise. 9ft tapered leader with 4 foot of stroft on the end (normally the 0.1mm or even smaller) and you are well away.

I am firmly in the non-greasing crowd, bit of gink on a hackled fly and degrease the 4 ft at the end is about it for me.

Hi - For what its worth here is my method which I find suits on most occasions
I use a copolymer tapered leader of 12 ft or 9ft depending on conditions. I then attach a low diameter fluoro tippet with or without a dropper . A low diameter fluoro tippet wont sink your flies , but its better to use a middle action rod which will absorb the shock and not break your tippet . Some fast action rods will just be too stiff for light tippets. I also rub some some mucilin on my fly line and tapered leader to prevent a belly forming and only degrease the the fluoro tippet.
Hope this helps

I've gone over to the Preston Powerflo line since writing this but all the details you need are here.

Dry Fly 'Expert': Leader linguistics, tippet talk and tips...

In other words, make your own, in the way described. They are far better than bought leaders in that bought leaders are perfect for the conditions the designer designed them for. Your self-made leaders will be perfect for every condition you come across because you will build them to suit your needs at that moment.

I don't make my own but I'm going to start. It would be more satisfying to make your own.

I'm with Richard on his recipe for making up your own tippet. I followed his advice years ago and have never looked back. My preferred material is Rio Powerflex. Lovely and supple, narrow diameter and I've never had a knot slip on it.
