Default River don sheffield, today

Went for a couple of hours today, The river was about a foot and half up on last week and no banking showing at all where i planned on having a go, Also a bit coloured. I managed to get a grayling about 3/4lb from further up the river and had 2 takes all on a goldhead red epoxy buzzer. Didnt expect to catch at all but it was nice just to be there.

Good conditions and you have every chance... poor conditions and things aint the same.... All the 'road' run-off around Sheffield wont help matters unlike upland waters.... a different 'breed' our Fish eh?

The part of the river i fish is on the upper reaches middlewood upwards but the hills around contribute a lot of runoff. Our fish must be different in fact got to be to live in the don mind you its cleaned up a lot since i was a lad.

Went on the Don yesterday at Oughtibridge. It was really unfishable but my mate had a pint of maggots he was determined to drown.

Caught 6 brownies (oops!) and 2 grayling on a tungsten-beaded, pink shrimp in a bit of slack water. My mate only managed to catch 1 grayling, trotting with maggots.

Looking at the weather forecast, with no more rain forecast, it should be in good condition by the middle of next week.

Myself, fellow forum member highbank and local Don expert Dan Gill had a day on the Don today fished downstream of Oughtibridge. Difficult conditions still, the river running high, but starting to clear. We all had 4 fish each. I lost a big fish, don't know what it was, I had it on for about 5 mins, it kept very deep and held the bottom, Dan reckoned it could have been a Barbel or Chub.

Likely to be a barbel. Dave woodhead had one about 6lbs on a goldhead in winter (I think last year or the year before, can't quite remember). He said he thought he'd hooked a snag until he waded in to loosen it with his boot - and then the "bottom" started moving slowly away!

Hell of a fight on a 4 weight, but he gave it plenty of stick and landed it.

Hi Paul,

The fish behaved just as you described, at 1st I thought I snagged the bottom, then it moved and felt like I had a clump of leaves on my hook, then it moved again, slow and heavy and I couldn't do anything to stop it. I was using my 11ft 4wt which didn't give me much stopping power.

Gary.

Hi Lee
We fished a good way down past the foot bridge, had a more trout than grayling. The Grayling seemed to have held up somewhere. I fished it last week with a mate and we had 27 fish between us, the conditions similar, maybe not as much water.
