Default Devon River Beats That Allow Dogs

Happy New Year all.

Im planning a trip to fish the Devon area in May. Im really looking forward to it after having to cancel other planned trips.

My mate has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works though by being forced to bring his dog. This now limits where we can fish which is a shame as i was looking forward to fishing the Duchy waters which don't allow mans best friend.
Im after info on beats that do allow dogs and at the moment i have come up with the Upper Teign waters,a few beats on the Angling 2000 scheme and the Half Moon stretch at Sheepwash on the Torridge.
Any other info would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Mark

Why not book the dog into a kennels? Surely worth the flexibility it restores?

Or Still take the Dog and Maybe just use a company like this for the days you fish a beat that the Dog is not welcome

Thanks for the replies guys.

Ill suggest those options to my mate.

Toby,
I have posted the same question on Pete's forum. In fact Simon has just told me they allow dogs on the Fox and Hounds stretch of the Taw which I believe is where Pete guides from.

I wanted to wild camp on Dartmoor and fish the Duchy waters. I might take my car up as well to give me more options.

By the way your still invited to stay with us for a while if you want to even though you are Spurs. We have a spare room as Gary might be coming for one or two nights. It's only a single bed though.....

Hi Mark,

Dogs are welcomed at the F & H although some of the beats have cows and sheep on them from time to time. The beat out back of the hotel is perfect though and probably one of the prettiest along with the beat below which is usually fine for dogs too.

If you are down from the 3rd week of May you should take a look at the Taw as mayfly as been really good the last few years. We rose the first fish on 1st May and the same guy hooked the last fish the second week of June although we did rise a sea trout to a mayfly in July as there were still coming off. It's not like the chalkstreams but there are enough your fly doesn't get lost in a cast of 1000's!

You should be fine on Dartmoor especially if you are heading off the beaten track.

If the weather is poor you and you want to fish stillwaters there's Fernworthy that dogs should be fine at and if you fancy a slightly longer drive Colliford is a great place to fish that you'll be fine with a dog. Pack your tadpole patterns just in case!

Give me a shout if you need anything as I be happy to help.

Pete

Hi Mark,

In relation to the UTFA, the bulk of the waters are leased, the landowners have differing rules regarding dogs, but they should be kept under close control at all times, in fact there is a pheasant shoot in the valley and the gamekeeper doesn't take kindly to dogs running loose.
But the truth of the matter is most owners don't take any notice of the byelaws and dogs are generally accepted, until a stick is thrown into the river where an angler is fishing.
But the river has some great fishing, Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout fishing.

A word of warning in relation to taking a dog on Dartmoor, please make sure it is on a lead, there have been many incidents of sheep worrying in the past 12 months and the farmers will shoot any dogs seen worrying sheep, they also have the full backing of the police, that is something you really need to be made aware of and has been widely publicised in the media recently.

If you need any further advice you are more than welcome to contact me.

Cheers

Richard

Mark sounds good.
Will give you a call next week.
There is aways the option of going for Bass as well if that floats your boat.

Hi guys,
Thanks very much for the advice.
My mate assures me he has his dog under control at all times. He has fished and camped on Dartmoor before with the dog with no problems. He is also fully aware about the shooting of dogs. I must admit my initial concerns that bringing a dog will severely limit our fishing options has been quashed.
It would be good to hit the Mayfly, fingers crossed.
Toby,
You know me mate I would be well up for some Bass but I'm not sure the others would be though.
I'm meant to be fishing Wales next weekend but the weather could put an and to that idea. Now that's a surprise....

Cheers,
Mark
