Default My Hypothesis.....what do you think ?

Hi Guys

I was fishing a small fishery the other day it allows C & R my favorite place does not.

The C & R place is more heavily stocked ive noticed the condition of the fish are not quite as nice. Often have mouth sores and can be rather limp in the fight.................

Another interesting thing is small (size 16 etc) natural fly patterns often work there when big flashy lures dont !

My hypothesis is that these fish after getting caught again and agian soon learn to avoid bright lures ?

Keep going and they'll learn to ignore your size 16's Then you'll have a challenge!

Learned behaviour is big in the carp & barbel scene. I guess it hasn't really been discussed that much with game fish as c&r is fairly new. I agree with your hippopotamus though.

Wink Re: My Hypothesis.....what do you think ?

For fear of the criticism this post will inevitably attract from certain purists:

I have been on a club 'away day' where we went to a commercial C&R fishery, that we'd heard good things about, and over the course of the morning we threw everything but the kitchen sink at this place. Despite seeing plenty of movement, not a fish was taken all morning. After lunch my cousin took a good fish and the usual buzz of 'what did you get it on?' was met with a 'keep the effin noise doon', as he was fishing a spinner off a floating line! Funnily enough everyone caught in the afternoon, just by giving them something different.

Pablo

ps their sign said 'no boobies', it said nothing about spinners....

pps every member of my club now keeps at least one of those wee funny spinners designed for being fished off a fly line with them when we go on an away day....

Maybe I should have pointed out it was Flicker, single debarbed-hook spinners we used and the fish were released alive and well.

i bet if you read your ticket when you paid it would of said no flicker spinners.
it's spinning mate not fly fishing. some days we blank you just have to accept that.
you said you tried everything, did you try a bloodworm in a size 16 or 18 suspended under a dry or a bung?
chuck the flicker spinners mate you dont need them

At first I was thinking of a "spinner" mayfly pattern until I read your last sentence...

I'm not sure why you think it is only the "purists" you will attract criticism from. I think it will be every "fly fisherman". Sorry, fishing a spinner with fly gear does not make it "fly fishing". The fishery may well have had a rule that you could not fish boobies, but they no doubt also had a rule (probably the first on the list) that only fly fishing is permitted. No wonder your friend wanted to keep the noise down...

Fortunately, I don't feel the need to "catch at all costs". I get enough of a kick out of simply going fly fishing.
