Default trout season?

I have been out on my favourite river (Clyde)--trying to catch grayling.
Although I am catching the odd grayling, I have been catching trout--in fact I have been catching more trout now, than I caught when in season.
They have been in good condition-fight hard and swim away strongly.
I don't want to target trout that are out of season,so I move on,but then I catch more trout.
I am beginning to think that perhaps we have got this trout season wrong.
Maybe it should be moved to ---lets say the end of December and then close until beginning of May---Whats your thoughts?-------Peter.

Hardly a justifiable reason for altering close of season, because you catch more out of season The same would apply to most species Peter. Trout are heavy with milt and spawn at this time of year, or have already spawned and are in poor condition and need recovery time. As said, try and alter your tactics to lessen the chances of hooking trout.

Peter, I don't think we should consider changing anything until the Clyde clubs can put together and pull off a formal study on trout redds, but nobody in power wants to, and the CRF will only do it if they are paid.

Anyway, the spawning mechanisms of fish are triggered mainly by light and temperature. As far as I'm aware nothing has changed with short days in any winter, so leave them be I say.

Perhaps the fish you are catching are winter feeders having not yet matured? Just because a trout is say 2lbs in weight, doesn't mean it is ready to spawn.

Another point to consider is that if selfish, ignorant anglers hadn't gone and stocked our rivers with alien species, we wouldn't even be having this conversation, for you wouldn't still be fishing.

Catching well conditioned trout doesn't give us anything to go by anyway, and if you ever experience having to chap an out of season trout for whatever humane reason, you will find that they turn from their lovely golden brown and yellow to black in minutes.

Oh ask yourself before posting, is there really any need?

Do you know of any grayling fly which will be refused by a hungry winter feeding or recovering spawning trout?

Is there such a fly? I don't think so.

I am using grayling flies ( I could tell you who tied them for me but I ain't)
They are pink thingies--maybe I should put a label on them saying grayling only. Do you think that would help?

Peter, there is no such thing as a dedicated grayling fly which will exclude trout.

Spencer's off on one again.

Does that mean you no longer have use for that signed book on Grayling fly fishing you bought through my friend last year

Maybe we should stop fishing from October until December to give the trout a chance and only start grayling fishing from the 1st January.
Just an observation on my catches from the last couple of years.
We are told that the climate is changing---is the trout seasons written in stone?

Grow up?

You know there is?

Let's hear them then. Which flies are designed exclusively for grayling and will be ignored by trout?

This should be good.
