HI Ray, depending on the leader I am using I either use, three sections of colored mono, or one of the 'drops' style indicators.

Have a look at the links in my signature.

Hi Frank
The drop indicators look good, but do they not weigh down the leader?

Ray, the beads are very light and when, if nymphing, you are fishing correctly your indicator and leader should not be laid in the surface of the water.

What's the point of using an indicator in the air?

The idea is that the indicator help to see the smallest twitch of the line as a fish picks up the flies. One of the reasons this method can be so effective is that because no line/leader is on the water, as the leader and tippet bisect the surface at an angle, the flies always drift as naturally as possible.

I would have thought that if you can see an indicator move in the air, you would see your line move? I just don't see the point in an airborne indicator.

Surely the leader has to move to make the indicator move?

The indicator which may be, as shown in the diagram above, just a section of coloured mono will move first. When you also consider that the section of leader in question is something like .18mm or .20 mm in diameter it it is far easier to see the coloured line, or indeed the small colored beads on the indicator leader.

So the indicator is just a coloured part of the leader lower down which obviously will move first, I just thought you meant some other indicator attached to the leader, so couldn't work out why it would first.
