My Lab pulls on the leash, never passes so much a mud puddle without trying to go for a dip, and never passes another dog without wanting to socialize a bit. Basically, she is cheerfully disobedient. OK, my fault for not doing a better job training her, and I have to admit, more people in our neighborhood know her name than mine, from me running after her yelling her name. For the record, her first name is not "dammit", and "Emma" is not her family name, it is her first name.

Have any of you more expert Lab owners ever trained a Lab to find trout for you without spooking them ? I mean, of course, the Lab not spooking the fish, not you spooking the dog.

Well i have a lab mix and i never go fishing without him when im fishing local. Sometimes i will reel in squawfish and let him bat it around. He is sure good at that

If she's anything like my two the minute she smells water you won't get her out

well my lab ,, see avator. Only fishes with me at night as if she is anywhere near water she is straight in it...
At night however she doesnt like going in. So when I am sea trout fishing she is welcome company and is my ears.. I am pretty deaf and she listens out for unwelcome company on a night. As for fish she has landed one or two for me she is very soft mouthed and doesnt disturb a scale on them . She does however like to watch the fish taking the weirs and will sit for ages watching them....

I had a flatcoat that was absolutely fascinated by fish. He would actively look for fish whenever my work took me along a clear river. I used to do a lot of fisheries survey work which involved holding fish in aerated tanks and the dog would watch these for hours, ducking his head under water to get a closer look. He was not averse to catching and eating one if he got the chance. His best was a rather unwell 5lb carp which he proudly brought to me.

My two will sit on bank and watch.
however given the fetch command, they will be in, and try to retrieve the fish on the end!
must stress is only if given the command!

If you ever manage to train you Labrador to sniff out trout, please do not take it to the post office on pension day, as you'll only confuse your lab.

my golden lab knows when I hook into one and runs about and then tries to get the fish from net, but my youngest black field lab ***** actually caught a rainbow that was hiding under the bank undercut last week. So I think yes, they could find them with some training, labs are amazing hunters.

Odd, the ***** was not a swear word, just female term for dog..PC gone mad..

I'm not sure about them being trained to find fish but, I do remember watching the "A Passion For Angling" series where Chris Yates & Bob James were fishing for salmon up in the highlands when I think it was Bob hooked a half decent trout and sent his black lab in to retrieve it.

Rob
