Default The Test at Longparish

During the week I booked a ticket to fish the Test at Longparish through the Rod Box at Winchester.
The day started pretty cold with the odd rain, the river seemed low but was running clear. I parked up and set up my 4wt with a Gnat dry fly walking down to the river I met up with the keeper, he told me it was fishing slow and most of the fish were being caught on the ptn. I decided to sick with the dry for the first hour to see if they would come up, as there was a lot of midges in the air.
I walked to the top of the beat by the road bridge, the water here was only a foot deep, so I wadded across over to one of the carriers were I saw some nice size browns but could not make out any graying, I had a few cast knelt low as not to disturb the fish, to no avail no fish as soon as they saw me stand up they were off
So back onto the main river, I wadded upto the first weir and cast into the turbulent water a bingo my first fish, if you can call it that a lovely graying all of 3 inches.
So up I went onto the second part determined to catch on the dry, I walked low and the next cast I was in again this time it was a better grayling.

I carried on walking upto the next weir with no more fish to the net, so I changed over to a ptn. a few casts later and the rod pulled round and the fish was on, at first I thought it was a good grayling then as it came to the net I could see those lovely colours of a brown trout, not what I wanted but on this cold day all the same it was welcome.

Well as the day went on it seemed to get colder, most of the grayling from then on were small, I changed back to the dry and had another 4 brown trout and a few more grayling.
The best came right at the end a grayling of about a pound, but like most things, as I unhooked it, it jumped back in so no photo sorry.
It was a nice day out, and a lovely stretch of river.
If you want a ticket they cost £40 from the Rod Box in Winchester and the stretch is opened till the 30th December.
Here's a few more pictures of the day thanks Stephen
