Default sick of lures...

Im fairly new to fly fishing and have mainly been using lures on my local still water. Im starting to think that the trout are getting wise to them, i seem to catch loads when the keeper has stocked up but then struggle the next time. Everybody on the lake seems to fish lures, Im wondering what tactic i could change to. Would nymphs be a good change, if so which ones and how best to fish them? what line etc, i am tending to use an int line at the moment as there is very little movement on the top

New stockies go mad for lures. I've a mate who only fishes Cat's Whiskers. Try fishing a simple Olive Damsel with maybe a Diawl Bach on a dropper with a figure-of-eight retrieve.

Nymphs and buzzers, stick with intermediate line. Fish slow but keep in touch with flies, i.e tight line.

Even in the depth of winter, you can get a rise on and fish in the upper levels. Dries, nymphs, buzzers, wets - all will work, on their day at the right time.

however, sometimes lures are the only thing that will get a response. As Tommy says, new stockies will often grab anything dragged in front of them. However once they have been caught and released a couple of times they start to wise up. That's when you need to ring the changes. Explore the levels carefully, depth is critical. Experiment with your retrieve. Try lures that they probably haven't seen before.
If you catch one or two and then the takes dry up, try changing your fly - size, colour, pattern.
Be prepared to move around to find the fish.

Where do you fish Scott?

A mixture of Diawl Bachs, Crunchers, GRHE and Buzzers will cover nigh everything on stocked waters when fishing the wee stuff.

Straight line them on a floater or sink tip, or the washing line rig with a small booby on the point using floater, sink tip or intermediate.

Don't forget the bung on a floater, good method and don't listen to the knockers.

The Pirate.

Do a klinkhammer pre-treated with water shed they'll be less suspicious...put an okay dokey on with it or a millenium bug (same thing really) when the temps down..you'll do well.

There ya go. The Pirate's said it all. Well, 99% of it. The other 1% is open to endless debate

I'd add a PTN, Black and Peacock spider, and a Stewarts black spider. If they come on to a midday buzzer hatch, try ginking up the Stewarts and fishing it in the surface film. (talking midwinter, here)

One method worth a go, if boobies are allowed. Fast sinking line with a 6ft or so leader. Booby on point and one on a dropper at 3ft. (Distances may need adjusting). Let the line sink to the bottom, and then twitch the boobies back, vary the retrieve but keep pausing to let the boobies drift back upwards. The line may take longer to get down than you think. Don't fish them static like that - risk of fish taking them deep into their throat.

Oh, and don't forget the Apps bloodworm. It's really a lure but you can pretend otherwise.

Try Buzzers - Great way to catch trout , When the weather warms try dry flies even if there is no obvious rise - You will be surprised

Scratch's ( From this forum )Buzzers are awesome fish catchers
