Default Grayling on lures

went river fishing for the first time yesterday with a friend of mine fishing for grayling and have to say it was much more exciting than stillwaters. i caught 2 one on a wet fly the other on a small black lure. was just wondering what lures are best to use as there is a deep pool on the river that is very still that my friend who fishes it alot says its difficult to get takes because they have so much time to look at the fly. also missed a lot with a dry - still learning but what a buzz standing in the water with a fish rising 2m from you and keeps taking the fly im drifing over its head... i will catch the little ****** next time...

Im looking forward to having ago myself on my local river this winter for the grayling. I fished for them on the ribble once last winter and bumbed one off just as I were about handle it it came off. I also missed a few, their really quick, pluck and gone, they dont give you time to react. I dont mind fishing in the cold as long as it's not windy, so if conditions are right i'll give it ago
I once caught a grayling on a spinner a few years back, I didnt think they'd take fry, I were really shocked when I got that one.

The biggest grayling I ve ever caught hit a size 3 mepps on the Annan whilst spinning for salmon...I was at first till I saw how big and how perfect it was it put up a stonking fight as well.

I have to say that catching Grayling on lures isn't that common, and to be honest it isn't a method that i would ever consider to use for Grayling. On the other hand when i was out at the world championships with the England youth team In Italy one of my team mates did catch a Grayling on a big Chernoyble ant skated across the surface and got other takes from Grayling but they couldn't get there fly in there mouth!

I received a set of flies from a chap in Finland not long ago, and interestingly enough, it included a small streamer.

im no expert by any means, been fly fishing for about 4 months grayling fishing for about 4 hours and managed to catch one on a very small black fritz with a floating line. just thought it might be worth a try as where i fish there is a deep pool where they all sit and catching them with a fly is hard work.

Grayling can be caught on lures, but more caught on smaller flies. I catch plenty on spinner when targetting Perch and Trout on the river I fish but switching to small bead head flies catches a great deal more. I remember a past U.K record being caught on a mepps back in the early 90's from Wales somewhere. Many caught in lapland and Finland on spinners.

We witnessed a salmon fisher on the River Nith in spate, catch a decent sized Grayling on a Flying Condom. This is absolutely true and wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.
