Default Rivers Rivelin and Loxley

Hi all,
Does anyone know if the above rivers are free to fish in/around Sheffield?
Also, are they trout only and hence out of season, or can you fish for grayling and if so is it worth targeting them on these rivers?

Many Thanks.
Tony

Unhappy Re: Rivers Rivelin and Loxley

Hi Tonyt

No Grayling in any of these two rivers. The ponds in the Rivelin Valley are still open for coarse fishing ,but Crayfish are prevelant in some of them. Please if you come to the valleys clean your equipment before and after fishing. The Rivelin Valleyis owned by the city council and as such no payment is required but the day to day running of the valley is looked after by a team of vounteers RVCG and SPRITE also gives them an helping hand. The Loxley is different as some of the riperian owners are still water fisheries and the land extends to the river boundaries, so always ask first. So in a nutshell not worth going.

John is right, but the Don does hold Grayling in numbers and is also free to fish. See the urban river Don thread on here and Trout in the Town web page. They are having a meeting at Liversey Street Bridge next week , take your along and go fish.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.

Currently fish the Don at the Beetley wood stretch, would be interested to hear of other free sections.

Orvist3er, when is the meet at Liversey st. ?

9:30 a.m. on the 27th November. Bird and Bat box painting and installation followed by some grayling fishing.

Tea, Coffee, bacon butties and banter supplied by SPRITE - just bring yourself and the appropriate attire.

As Paul already said, nothing too much like hard work. B**ls**t deflectors optional.

Most of the Don is free to fish as council owned or riparian owners uninterested. Oughtibridge downstream to city centre almost extensive is free and full of fish. Kelham island is not advised due to a certain Mr T Canning thinking the Sheffield Kayak Club having access here. Salmon Pastures at Attercliffe holds large numbers of Grayling. Further downstream towards Rotherham angling clubs start to take ownership as more coarse fish become present. Take advantage of the free quality Grayling fishing but please respect the Trout and spawning areas.

Thanks orvist3er.

Yes indeed always respectful and wary of spawning trout during the closed season.

Had about 30 kayakers come past us early in the year when the water was higher, they were quite polite and hung back a fair distance until we had seen them before passing.
