Default Help - I'm catching too many trout

I'm catching too many trout at the moment and I need to catch fewer.
Why?
Because I don't want to hook Trout in the off-season, I'm trying to catch Grayling and although everything I'm hooking at the moment is going back as quickly as possible, really nice Brownie's is all I'm hooking.

Today they fell for Caddis, Klinks, and Grifiths. (Nothing took my nymphs.)

Any suggestions?
(And before any bright spark asks a stupid question yes, there are Grayling in the river.)

Hi T of D, have you had any really cold weather yet in your part of the world.?
I find once we have a few frosts and the water temperature takes a dive the trout just seem to vanish up here on the Eden in Cumbria.
Been out about six times for the grayling so far, and only connected with two trout, and that was two weeks back.

It's not been really cold yet, but the water was petty chilly today. Missed 3, got broken by 2 (I'm blaming that on some old mono I thought I'd try before chucking it out) and landed 2. All were big splashy takes, not gentle sups, so I'm pretty sure they were all trout today too. Bloody frustrating.

I had exactly the same problem this morning. 2 deg air temp.
But it all came good in the end.

There is only one answer to this. Stop fishing.

Under different circumstances , you could well be right.
At the very least , a shift of spot would be in order.

However , each and every one of the trout that I had this morn gave further truth to the fact that not every trout spawns every year.

Hard as nails , and in perfect condition.

I drove for an hour to the Wharfe at Bolton Abbey and paid £20 for a day ticket rather than fish for free on my club water and disturb a lot of Brownies. To a degree it was successful- I didn't hook any out of season brownies, but I only hooked a single Grayling about 1/2lb and dropped it as I reached for my net. It took a size 16 Gold Ribbed Ice Nymph similar to the Grayling Swap pattern.

Throwing money at the problem is obviously not the answer! My mate Dave landed a nice brownie on one of my Pink Punk PTNs. Interesting to hear the theory that a few frosts separates the Ladies from the WBTs.

And miss out on 5 months fishing? You must be joking!

(Obviously this is meant as a light hearted reposte so please don't flame me for an apparent contempt for the welfare of the fish.)
