10 foot 3 weight. No need for a short rod here, not many trees and the extra length gives better control.

I was down on Friday and managed 10 fish, only 1 of which was a trout. The water levels were very low and the fish are very spooky. Initially, I thought it was my approach but I sat down and watched a shoal, any little breeze that ruffled the surface scattered them.

I suspect that its a combination of bright skies, low water and fishing pressure. However, there were people having success by short line nymphing and not really moving but I cannot do that for hours at a time. However, with a careful approach, you can get near:

You would have a fit if you had to pay the trouting cost ,Can get much cheaper and as good but the travel costs soon add up .

Twenty years ago if you played your cards right grayling on the chalk could be had for free ,then they started to charge and now its heading for silly money

Make the most of your value fishing that too will increase in price !

Three of us were there Sunday. Unseasonably warm- near 18 deg-not my best idea to take neoprenes
Water is very clear and low, but we saw huge ammounts of fish- unfortunately they mostly saw us first thanks to a low , bright autumn sun and aforementioned low/clear water.
Grayling were mega fussy and proved very hard to tempt. We took a few from the carriers on upstream short nymphing, and I hooked a brown of about 4lb whilst trying to winkle out a lone Grayling in a big shoal of trout.
I think a good frost/ spell of consistant rain is required to perk things up.
Although, a pleasant day was had on a nice stretch of water.
Saw more than a few nice Pike too, thought one of about 8lb was a trout at first
Used an 8 ft 4 wt all day- no probs, but a longer rod would suit the upper beats, the lower right carrier is quite restricted at the bottom end and will suit a shorter stick.

Ade.

Hope it was still worth the trip Ade. I'll go down later in the week and have a go. We need about 3 months of steady rainfall!

Regards
Peter
