The Airflo StreamTec XT nantec is the latest addition to the Airflo river rod range. After using Airflo
fly rods for the last three seasons, frankly, I will not pick up another rod be it for dries, French nymphing or Czech Nypmhing. Airflo have come so far and are leading the mid range fly fishing rod innovation at the moment. Over time, after using many rods in many different fishing situations, the Airflo Streamtec XT has been the best performer.
Cosmetically, I think the rod is outstanding. The build quality is of very high standard, take the reel seat for example, it has a sealed burl wood insert, which creates a strong and sturdy seat and adds that little bit more class to the rod, visually. All fly reels I have tried fit snug and proper in the foot housing .The single leg eyes are positioned well and withstand line wear. The half wells handle is of good quality and sits comfortably in the hand, although I would prefer the handle to be a bit slimmer.
As for casting, the SteamTec XT performs with excellence. Whether having to cast 20’ or 70’ the mid-tip action holds the line well in the air, delivers delicate presentation and pin point accuracy. It is perfect for casting to those fish on the far bank or Czech nymphing at close range. Pairing the rod up with the highest line rating (5weight) aids short/close range fishing techniques such as roll casts. The quick recovery on the tip means making mends at long or short range easy.
The length of the rod allows total control over your chosen methods, be it upstream spiders or dries. Although using the 10ft version on small rivers sometimes proves inadequate when trying to get into tight spaces the rod really comes to life on medium to large rivers.
The rod has a ‘Low Flash’ matt olive/brown finish and matching whippings. For protection, the rod is supplied in a bag and cordura rod tube, although there is a Lifetime warranty if the unfortunate was ever to happen.
Understanding the new NANO technology in human terms! - The nano technology has really improved the durability and strength of the rod. The nano technology is pretty simple – in old rod designs, there is a lot of resin build up within the carbon fibre, the resin holds the carbon together, but in turn adds weight and thickness to the rod. The new nano technology means that the resin is thinner, and allows the builder to pack more carbon into the rod, binding it tighter using less resin, creating a thinner, stronger stick!
Overall, this rod can compete with some of the higher end rods proving it time and time again. For the price, just £99.99, I can think of no better rod to have within my
fishing tackle to deliver all aspects of river fishing.
