Default Trout Behaviour and Coiled Line

I fished a small trout fishery on the weekend and failed to catch any trout (for the first time). I tried pretty much every fly in my (albeit limited) fly box. They just weren't taking any of the flys. I could see plenty (probably 20 - 30) of trout on the surface in the middle of the lake and the water was 'boiling' with all the movement of them. Quite a few of the trout were also jumping at least a foot out of the water but no obvious food source.

What were the trout doing ?

What else should I have done to try and catch them ?

As a side note, my Dad also used his new Greys GRXI+ reel and line. As he pulled the line off the reel it appeared to coil quite badly througout the day, making casting difficult as it kept tangle at his feet. How Can we resolve this issue ?

Its hard to say unless I was there to witness it, could have been one of several reasons e.g. the fish were crowding and attacking fry, they could have been irritable due to low oxygen levels, they could have been attempting to dislodge parasites sich as lice.

Re the GRXi line, they are notorious for memory issues, whereas the more expensive Platinum from the same stable is a very low memory line, albeit double the price.

Hi Powerkiter not sure about what would have worked on the fish, somedays they just cant be caught!
However the line problem is easily fixed, it just needs a good stretch before using. If you take hold of the line and walk away for 20 yards or so, get your old man to point the rod at you and hold the reel end of the line, so you are pulling the line in a straight line and you should be able to stretch the line by quite a bit, hold it for a few seconds and when you let go it should be coil free.
All the best.
Mike

As for your dad I think a line stretch might help...remove the memory from the line. As for not catching anything...well it happens I guess. I fished a res this afternoon it was sunny and I can count on one hand the risers is saw....I fished nymphs high and low...buzzers...a ladybird since i saw one on my t-shirt....an adams....a klinkhammer and even a maggot lookalike...blanked...was a great day to be out though!

Thanks for the comments.

The line issue appears fairly easy to resolve.

Interesting what you say about lice. I have seen quite a few fish at the fishery with lice on and a few we caught a couple of weeks ago also had lice on them.

Looks like a good line stretch is needed....however one bit of advice, which I'm sure Stewart wil agree with.....if you do stretch the line, do not immediately put it back on the reel: this will only put the coil back in.

Stretch it, then cast for a while, fish, maybe catch a trout or two. Coils should then not recur.
