Default dry fly on a switch rod !

Went fishing tonight intending to swing streamers down and across on my small spate river with my TFO Deer Creek 11ft 4wt switch rod (AFTM 6wt according to the Common Cents system). Initially conditions were windy with the river high, fast and coloured.

No joy on a variety of streamers and no rises seen at all. So in desperation, tied on a size 14 black klinkhammer....bang, first cast - wild brownie followed by another, then I missed one. Astoundingly, the rod really bent on a 1 pound brownie and I didn't feel overgunned at all.
Great evenings work !

Nigel

I've used a 13'2'' Loop Adventure and a Rio AFS 8/9 shooting head on the unsuspecting wild browns in a local ressie more than once.
The extra distance made all the difference , and they didn't know what had hit them

Nice work! I use my switch on the Tongariro, I will often change from a streamer to a dry in the evening, usualy a skating caddis and it is very effective on the Rainbows.
All the best.

I used my switch for salmon, and wished I had something stiffer on the day of the happy event that I actually landed something Still 'twas fun....

My mate took one look at the rod as we set off and said "you are going to fish with that? - you have seen that river?! - And it's still making!!"

Nigel - were you using a switch line as well?

Dartford Navigator,

My switch rod is a Temple Fork, Deer Creek series 11ft 4wt 100 - 200 grains(I recon that it is equivalent to an AFTM single handed 6wt - according to the Common Cents System.)

Think it would work fine with a WF 7wt line (haven't actually tried yet) but I'm using a Rio Switch floating switch line 4/5F....Endric recons it needs a slightly heavier line and he is doubtless right - I am just too bad a caster to be able to judge such niceties !!!!!!! LOL
