Default lechlade advice

I'm fishing lechlade on sunday for the first time and I've got absolutely no ideas how to fish it or what to expect. I fish rivers for 95% of the time.

Any info on flies, set up or other techniques to try for this time of year will be greatly appreciated. cheers. burhan

Cheers mike. Could you elaborate please. It's not a cheap day out so I'd love to catch at least one fish.

I really don't think it would appeal to you mate, it's about as far from a natural fishing experience as you can get.

For less money you could get a boat on Blagdon or Chew if you want stillwater fishing, and less of a drive. Another time, with more notice, I can show you around.

I caught a 9 1/2lb brown on a dry with a 5wt on my only vsit to Lechlade, and it came in after one half-hearted run. A 3-4lb Bristol Water fish can tow the boat.

If you are meeting people there I would go to Bushyleaze across the road, cheaper but far more satisfying.

If you must though, drop Browniebasher a PM. He will put you right.

I've fished it twice (corporate day invitation things) but to be honest wouldn't go back. Had big fat limits of 4 both times but not my thing really. Also first visit I had my 4 in a couple of hours and there's no C&R afterwards, they want you to buy another ticket - yeah right, at those prices! I was using small olive fritz and marabou goldheads both times I think, goldhead buzzers too, but I dont think they are really that fussy about patterns. Thats not to say its always easy, sometimes they are just not feeding much. Have a think about what you are going to do with all that trout meat afterwards - its a lot to eat and its quite fatty with not a lot of flavour - well not the ones I caught anyway. Browniebasher on here is a regular there I believe, he really loves it, so perhaps drop him a PM if he doesn't see this thread.

Thanks chaps for some excellent advice. still water doesn't really suit me but after catching some bonefish and tarpon last month, I just wanna feel a big fish on the end of my line. I fished shimano big fish waters a few times and didn't really rate it.

Hey mike thanks for the offer I might take you up on that one sir. Btw we still haven't seen you on the lower taff this season have we? We'll sort something out with terry I'm sure.

Thanks again fellas much appreciated.

I'd agree with the others...I am not sure that you are going to enjoy Lechlade based on where you have fished previously? It used to be a good stillwater. The reason was a very large average fish size: 6-7 lb was 'normal' with lots of 10+ lbs. The water clarity was also good. In recent years the stocking policy has gone downhill (if you like the aforementioned sort of thing), with a the average size reduced and much fewer fish. In the last couple of years they have also cut down too many bankside trees. The place has been frozen in the coldest weather and fish mortality has been an issue in the hotter weather.

I started my fishing on stillwaters 15-20 years ago, but now fish almost entirely on rivers, with wild trout really being my thing. Every now and then I still fish stillwaters with some friends, but Lechlade has fallen off the list I am prepared to visit. Avington remains the best after many, many years but is (the most?) expensive. Maningford is about half the price, the average fish are smaller (though in top condition) and the place also has a very good insect life so you can fish dry fly on the lake and small stream.

Best of luck...hope you prove us wrong and have a decent day!

PS on flies, the thing at Lechlade always used to be heavily leaded buzzers fished deep and with a very slow retrieve.
