Default Okuma Helios

I noted a few mentions of this reel on here but no one is really saying much more than "OK for the money".

I am in the market for a new #8/9 reel for my sal****er fishing (to replace a worn out Batenkill large arbour) however, due to the price of spare spools (of which I need 3) I do not want to go to Abel/Tibor/Pate, etc.

Has anyone actually used one for severe sal****er fishing (i.e. bonefish and tarpon)??

Regards,

Phil

Hi Phil

I think the species you mention would test the reel, to say the least. Personally, I wouldn't want to rely on it in a far off destination.
With a quality reel you only have to buy it once!

I use an Okuma Helios and it's more than "o.k. for the money". Superior to the Vosseler DC4 (which I also have)that people rate so highly IMO. Whether it would cope with Bones or Tarpon I wouldn't know as I've never fished for them.

I have to agree with MJB here. I have a Helios , and it is good value for money. Great build quality and an excellent drag system.

the helios sounds like a good buy for a bonefish reel; personally i use a shimano ultegra 7/8 for bones which is superb and a lot cheaper, but, imho, tarpon are a different ball game - especially in the larger sizes - even medium quality reels blow up when confronted with 50+lbs of leaping giant herring - far better to save up and hawk around ebay for a good deal on a top reel - i picked up a couple of orvis vortex brand new for $250 each - tough to beat at that price. If cost is really an issue then billy pate is seen on some of his videos catching very large tarpon on a system 2 size 12/13 reel - they need careful maintenance but are tough enough.
