Default good reel for an old split cane rod?

Hi, i'm brand new to fly-fishing and my dad has just given me his "sharp scotty" spilt cane rod which is beautiful but heavy and difficult to use. I have been recomended not to use it untill i become more proficient, but i was wandering what reel might compliment its craftmanship?, the orginial is no where to be seen.

Hardy Marquis or a J W Youngs Condex.

I have an old Sharpes Gordon on mine, it looks good and matches well. I hate casting with mine, but it is superb with a fish on. I enjoy using mine for the odd day sniping fish with wee dries right in at the edge of fisheries, when i feel the need to get a fish NOW!

great old set up

If you want to be precise to find a reel to balance the rod.

Put a reel on, and hang lead weights on until it balances, then you will know the weight of reel you need.

I think you need a Perfect type copy, a Dingley, with agate ring. The youngs may do it, otherwise you have to put up with that top heavy feeling.

You get used to it, with some of the heavier older rods.

I'd check the rod out first too, especially the ferrules, and the tap of death.

What model and length is your Scotty ramrod? You will get much better advice on the make, model and size of suitable sized reel to match your Sharpe's rod if you post that information.

David.
