Default Cane rod?

Hi All,

I am looking for help on this rod if anyone can give me some history.

The rod is a cane rod of about 7' spinning rod(I know its not fly fishing)it was given to a priest around 1970 and he gave it to one of his friends who passed it to my friend. The rod was for 35yrs service to the community of a very respected priest so I imagine it was a very good quality rod.

The markings are thus- caledonia 5lbs and is signed martin ales or alex,it is a little rusty on the rings but otherwise looks ok if anyone knows of these rods please drop me a note.

ps,I now after a search think it may be from a firm from Glasgow called Alex Martin any info greatly appreciated.

Pete

It's pretty definitely an Alex Martin. They made quite good cane spinning rods. My father and I had some in the 1950s. They are not that valuable but are still collected by some. A custom built one may have some extra value.

I know of Caledonia reels.

They eventually became the famous Dixon & Martin of royal exchange square Glasgow.a shop that as a teenager i used to get the train from the sticks just to drool at their 4 large windows of tackle and guns.I would then go round the corner to west nile st to Arthur allen the tackle shop .(not so posh)and i would finish my adventure into the big city with a visit to Robertsons.at Wellington st. Then home to dream of the monsters i would catch.
wonderfull memories.

jim

PS I believe Dixon & Martin still have a shop in Edinburgh.
