Default Stratonymph rods

I just wonder if anyone has the 7/8 or 6/7# 10' rods and how they get on with them?

I have always like the look of the rods, but wonder about the weight (in the hand) and how they compare with other premium brands?

And as the 7/8 is named the allrounder if its ok with light tippets (6lb say) if you want to fish dries? I see Steve does it in a 3 piece.

I do know the blanks are first class, and the coarse guy's in the know rate Harrisons!

If you can offer any advice. Sparton is only 30 mins away from me now, so I could go and look.

Thanks to all.

Good rods, built on proper English blanks.

I had a 6/7 Stratonymph and still have some of his heavier rods for deep water reservoir work.

Personally I'd go for the 9ft 6" option.

Talk to Steve direct - he will put you right.

hope this helps.

Wonderfull rods, but the action is possibly a little bit slower than ''modern'' rods.casts for miles if you give it a chance, great for roll casting, and a pleasure to play a fish on.just my opinion.but i'm an old geezer.

Agree with the lads above...superbly made and finished rods on British blanks with a slightly slower action than some others. Steve says this is deliberate, as the rods were designed specifically for UK conditions. You can also ask Steve to customise the rod to some extent, eg my own "General" #9 heavy reservoir rod has snakes as opposed to Fuji rings.

"Try before you specify and buy" is great advice as you are pretty close to Steve's premises.

Default Sparton Rods

Good friend of mine had a custom built 9ft 6wt built up by Steve and it is a class act in my humble opinion.Even the grip is customised for the user.I had a play with this rod and it is a beauty to fish with.Action is how I like it and seems to smoothly draw on power reserves as you need it.I am sure this rod would hold its own easily in any test you may like to set it.In the value for money stakes would be a very hard act to follow even alongside the big guns.
No I do not own any of Steve's build ups because could not make up my mind exactly which rod I wanted but closer now so maybe soon.

Best JP

I have the two piece 10 feet 7/8 newport 3 version. Really great rod and you can buy them secondhand on ebay criminally cheaply. Just what I hope is an interesting observation .... the reason try before you buy is often given as good advice and the reason the earlier post on this thread said the other expensive rod he tried was sh~te in comparison is that rod and angler is an interactive relationship. The rod is an ever fixed mark but it changes the angler. The angler is moulded to the rods idiosyncrasies and these become ingrained over time. Use a strat and whatever rod you pick up feels odd because it is such a idiosyncratic rod ... in the image of mr parton maybe. If this is true .... and it may well be sh#te ..... pick up any rod and persevere and it will become the best rod in the world. Interistingly it may rubbish reviews cos they may be merely reviewing how close rod x is to their ingrained casting style.

Very true. I would find it hard to use a Stratonymph now, but a few years back it would have been perfect for me. They are certainly highly regarded rods. Some would say (Steve certainly would!) my casting action has been ruined by fast rods...

I've tried the 7/8 Stratonymph and rate it very highly. Personally I rate them right at the top of the tree.

I've got another two of his rods as well and they are superb fishing rods. They are slightly slower in action than most American rods and more robust than most rods.
