Question Upgrading my rod..

I'm looking to upgrade one of my rods now, I feel I've shaken off the two years of rust out of my system and I think my 'middle to tip' actioned rods are slowing me down a lot. So, any recommendations for a fast, tip actioned rod, 9' 6" in length, capable of throwing a full WF#8 line plus a bit of backing when needs be, in the "middle of the road" price range? None of this £200+ stuff, but a sensible price...around £100-£150.

Sharpes Gordon, Partridge fly rods, Greys.

I would look at these rods in that price range.

I don't reckon you can go far wrong with a Greyflex M2. I have 9ft 6" rods in #6/7 and #7/8. Excellent rod with the standard lifetime warranty from Greys. Has a faster action than most but not fast enough that it's harder to cast with, in fact it's easier. Brown blank, mine are 3 piece rods, and they come with a hard case. IMHO they are excellent VFM.

If I lived nearer Richard you'd be more than welcome to try one out.

As for the Partridge rods, I've had a go with one and thought it had a very middle to tip action so didn't like it very much, but that's only my opinion.

Can't comment on Sharpes as never seen one.

Thanks Adrian, I'd got Greys on my short list...possibly a second user Hardy from ebay as well. I can't for the life of me remember what rod I had before I sold up...I know it was a four piece but can I remember the name of it? Can I heck as like!!

Old age approaching...

The sharpes gordens is a great rod as is the much underrated Scierra Ti +
which is a fast rod very light 4 piece with a great finish.
Garry evans had them for less than half price a while back.

I have only used the Sharps Gordon for three casts - Very nice, light and fast actioned rod. Had a few feet of the stringy stuff out of the rod tip on the third try
Then the owner wanted it back

This may help in your selection

Cheers ... Tony

Hi sweeperdriver,
Be carful whenthinking of buying a Hardy rod. There are many models out there, and if you have no idea of the model you want, you may be buying a rod just because of the name. I bought one a few years ago, and did not like it one bit. You could get yourself a couple of Airflo rods for the price you would pay for a Hardy. Airflo rods, unlike the lines, are exceedingly good value for money, and they all cast really well.

For true tip actioned rods you are probably looking at the silly prices: of those in my experience I would suggest the Sharpes Gordon at being decent value for money (but did not think it as tippy as some).
The Loomis GLX or Sage TCR are the absolute doggy bits if you can stretch to £600. If not I would suggest looking for a Loomis IMX on Ebay, slightly older technology but the closest one will get and at a price tag of £50 - £100.

The other option, might be a casting lesson or two with a decent instructor and staying with the current rods at a cost of around £50! This is the true indicator of the 'tackle tart' or not question?
