Default Wychwood Truefly Reel

I watched a bit of the EFFTEX "top products" video and saw this reel just won two awards. Must be an unlaunched model, I guess, as the reel of the same name is readily available and nothing special.

Wychwood's own site has no reels on it at all, strangely.

Hi Charlie,

The reel you viewed is the new Wychwood Truefly reel which was launched to the trade at Efftex - it will be available on sale from September...

The reel is an aluminium cassette reel, which is the largest arbor and the lightest weight for a #7/8 cassette. The website will be updated in due course, in line with the product launch in September!

So watch this space

That's interesting - a very wide arbour and light cassette reel is exactly what's needed in the market

I think the issue with Wychwood and reels is that quite a few of us bought Ionica's and have seen them discontinued with no more spare spools, which has been a problem for such a costly item. Although they have been a very good reel, that has probably reduced their effective life and I would be concerned about that.

I agree that this has been a problem in the past and can be rather frustrating, so sincere apologies. The reason to discontinue these reels was not taken lightly, these reels had been on the market for 3 years which is a good life cycle for a reel and there had been spare spool stock to support these 3 years with some extra. You can never really as a brand/manufacturer accurately account for stock of 'spare' items particularly for machined reels as our research shows the average angler purchasing machined reels rarely buys an extra spool due to the cost. They would rather buy a new reel altogether - we all like a nice reel or two or three

This will not be a problem with the new truefly cassette reel, the cassette spools will be available as singles (£6.99) or doubles (£9.99) which will be keep in stock as long as the demand is there.

If anyone wishes to see a sneak preview of the new truefly reel please go to the Wychwood website and email Wychwood via the about us - contact us - product ideas section, with the title truefly reel in your email - I will ensure this is done!

Tightlines gents!

Got to have a good look at this reel at the Game Fair last Friday and I was quite impressed. As promised it is large than the other cassette reels on the market and feels lighter than the 199g that it actually is, which makes it lighter than all other top brands I believe (don't quote me on that). The build quality is good and what you would expect from a reel in this price range, the cassettes were nice and easy to load/unload compared to other models. I will be really interested to see how it performs when fishing!!

It will also be interesting to see how it performs against already established reels when it comes out later in the year in what is a very competitive market.

Really great to have "GameFisher's" input.

I have had most of the current cassette reels and sold all of them including the Demon.

The others because they were rather heavy, the demon because no matter how I approached the lock up procedure it was quite hard for my weak arthritic wrists to undo the reel to change the cassette, I always had to use a flannel or the like.

I now use and enjoy the Snowbee "Geo", great reel and spools, but I look forward to seeing and using the Wychwood cassette version.

I just hope I do not have to sell it on.

The unfortunate thing about cassette reels is the fact that they are not made for the high end market, but only for the medium sector.

Before anyone says something about the Geo not being a cassette reel I know this but I would still like to have a really excellent cassette reel as I like to travel mega light.

I also heard a rumour that Snowbee may do a cassette version of the Geo.

sounds interesting

I think wychwood have some really strong products at the moment (though I still swear by my Ionica as it is my favourite rod, I still keep looking for the same rod in different weights if I can get them as a bargain!)
