Default Best kit for bows £200 max?

Hi all,

my friend has finally decided to take the plunge and buy some kit so he can join me for some fishing. He`s got £200 to spend and I was hoping someone could point him in the right direction for some tackle. He`ll be joining me for still waters and loch trout fishing. Tight budget I know so any pointers gratfully recieved. It`s mainly a decent rod a reel we're looking for with the other bits and bobs accounting for the remainder of his budget.

Many thanks,
Jay.

You will find a use most days on most UK stillwaters for, and are unlikely to be caught out if you own...
  • A 9 foot 6 inch 7 weight rod
  • A reasonable quality reel with inexpensive spare spools
  • And 3 lines all in weight forward profile - floater, slow glass intermediate, and fast sinker

Any of Airflo's range are a good place to start, something like this in the 9'6 6/7 or 7/8 would be great:

http://www.fishtec.co.uk/ProductDeta...pListRec=44102

I use Danica reels like this:http://www.fishtec.co.uk/ProductDeta...pListRec=44236 or the C8 reels like this:http://www.fishtec.co.uk/ProductDeta...pListRec=44215 A top class angler once told me when I was starting out that reels are just line holders, buy a reasonably priced one with cheap spare spools and spend what I saved on casting tuition.

And I'm hearing excellent things about the fly lines that Pitsford Pirate (forum member) sells - you will get 2 lines for less than £30 delivered. Another tip is to join the fishtec discount club http://www.fishtec.co.uk/ProductsInC...Ref=40&cat=751 - £35 for 12 months which gives you a choice of free gifts (I went for the 2 fly lines) and also gives you 10% off all orders for a year.

That little lot should see him set up for around £150. Then there's some great little starter fly sets and boxes here:http://www.fastmailtackle.co.uk/

Default It depends on where you intend to fish ?

If your goint to fish reservoirs then a 9ft 6" rod #7 weight would be ideal...with matching lines in Floating, Fast Glass and DI-5 (perhaps a intermediate poly leader) to create a midge tip at a fraction of the cost... when attached to a floating line :-)

If you want to fish smaller still waters then 9ft 6" rod #7 would be ideal, with a Floating line, Fast glass and a DI-3

Rivers...then someone else can advise better..

Rods...the Vision Attack is a bargain for £80 and better that their top of the range models

Get a cheap cassette reel....(Vision Koma....£60 with 3 spools) and cheap backing.....

That should add up to around £200 with a box of flies etc...

Or you could contact Glasgow Angling Centre, or Rutland Water and ask what kits they'll make up for you in the £125 - £200 range...they'll both do you a good deal

Sonik rods are great for the money highly recommend the SK4 however if new to the game the SK3 is probably more forgiving. http://www.soniksports.com/

Do some nice reels as well. I would recomend a floater and a reasonably faster intermediate, with a poly leader to create a midge tip/ Given the time of year this is all thet is neccessary your friend can then build up his kit addiction over time.

1. EA Trout Licence - £24
2. Trion 6/7 9'6" Norris £52
3. Lines - Norris Bin ends or trout (£20)
4. Reel - Leeda Profil £30

That £126 - Another £50 for leaders/tippets and flys and such still leaves enough change for the first day out on a nice bit of water.

I just started on the fly this year so whilst I don't know all the in's and out's of the kit, I have been working to that kind of budget and I got the following which has worked well and caught a lot of fish!

Greys G series Rod 10' #7/8 £68.50 from Mikes Tackle
Greys GRXi reel + 3 spare spools £49.99 from cafaro Bros
flextec floating & intermediate lines plus backing for £20 off ebay shops
Flies tippet etc from various internet shops and local tackle shops.

You don't have to spend a fortune to get some good kit,
Cheers
Craig
