It's a hook holder for when carrying the rod set up.

It is for holding your fly [usually the point fly] whilst you are walking from one point on river/stillwater to another, but its not very practical if you are fishing with a leader longer than your rod, as this would mean you had to pull the fly line out through the tip ring every time you arrived at the next 'casting' area before commencing the next cast.

I usually leave some fly line through the tip ring then place the leader round the bottom of the reel and back up the rod maintining tension then hang the fly on one of the rod rings.

I usually place the top dropper in the fly line and then put the other dropper/point fly in to the cuff of my sleeve and carefully fold and manage the extra leader.

I use barbless flies anyway so its never any problem unhooking them from my clothes.

When taking the flies out, I take the top dropper out first, the one thats attached to the ring, then let it form slack line to the next fly (second dropper) which I will take out then do the same for the point fly.

I havent got in to any tangles this way and find it a quick way to up and go and cast.
