Craig, you're rushing into every aspect of fly fishing ,SLOW DOWN! get a rod that will see you ok(there are loads of good value rods out there) a 9' 6# will let fish for a few different species and waters, learn how to fish first ,spend any money you do have on fishing and lessons then once you gain experience and confidence you can buy lots of rods!!! It is much better to learn how to cast and read the water first and develop good habits and watercraft than wanting to buy every type of tackle you hear off.Listen to the good advice read the old posts (use the search option) have a bit of humility and respect for the advice available to you and maybe just maybe you won't get so much stick,Ihave came on the open forum to say to you now as you did not reply to my pm(things like that do not win friends )You are young and impetuous and I am still willing to give you the benefit of the doubt please listen to all the good people who up to now have been patient and you might turn out ok.

Pete

craig ,
don't buy top range rods at your age , unless you have a bottomless pit of money .
enjoy the sport , improve your casting and then move up to the top range rods when flyfishing becomes an obsession .

stick with rods in the £40-£60 range , i remember after quite a few years flyfishing i decided to spend £100 on a rod (a greys grx 9ft6") , a lovely rod and well worth the money .at the time i thought £100 was way to much to spend .

before that i was using my dads old milbro trufly then upgraded to a leeda dragonfly 8ft6" 5wt , cost me about £40 and it was a lovely 1st rod for rivers .i would still have it to this day if i'd not fallen in my local river and lost it

now after 15 yrs flyfishing i've moved up rods in the £200-300 bracket for my river work , but still use a (£45) daiwa lochmor x travel 4pc 9ft 6wt for most of my stillwater work .
reason being -you don't have to spend alot on a good quality rod

Perhaps you could swap your computer for a decent rod?

Hi, just get used to the Guideline Alpha I very very very very apologetically have not got to the post office with.

It is a great rod for learning timing and very good for little flicks on rivers with it's mid tip action.

The "Hardy" brand is exclusive to old people with too much money, who (endearingly)smell slightly too much like that pongy puddle frogs like to spawn in.

As you are 16, and I mean this in a completely hypothetical way; shouldn't you be spending your money on girls and drugs?!

Get a Grey's if you like the Hardy name, a G-series or GRXi if you insist on destroying your piggy bank. Don't forget there is the reel to buy, fly-line, backing, leaders, flys, tools, waders, rod licence, day tickets/club subs and probably a heap of other stuff.
