Default Split cane rod

This year I got my first custom made bamboo rod.
It was made by forum member 'Timmy' and I'd just like to say that it's a pleasure to use and a thing of beauty.
I'm happy to share the images:

As a fellow cane rod maker, I'd like to say that Tim's rod is a beauty. Swelled butts with inserts like this are not easy to make, and the reel fitting looks very good. Forum members should support real craftsmen like Tim and others, these cane rods are comparable in action to the better carbon rods. They have more soul than rods made by the like of Sage. By buying rods from cane makers you are paying for real craftsmanship, with little real retail markup, as I'm sure most of us know buying from people like Sage, the actual labour and material costs are low, most of the cost is retail mark up.

Beat the credit crunch, buy cane, support the British cane rod makers!

Default Looks Nice

Hi Chaps

Don't you think advanced technology over the years might give the edge to modern day rods performance wise as most fisherman claim. Anyway I wondered if you can get soft and stiff actioned bamboo blanks, as I'm tempted to put my Sage TCR up against a bamboo rod and see which comes out on top, but I do prefer super stiff rods hence my question.

Don't judge an orange until you peel and taste it for yourself

But Mick,
Cane rods do look so much nicer than new fangled carbon jobbies!
They even fish as well or better in my slightly biased opinion, yes you may have to adapt your casting style to suit one. A really well designed fast actioned imregnated cane rod (in a short length too!) coupled with a silk line, is a tool that is hard to beat on a river. I'll even go as far to say that a greenheart rod is well worth trying too, I have made a few greenheart rods over the years that make very good river rods, the ideal upstream spider rod.

Go on make a cane rod makers day, buy a British cane rod!

Hi All

You can get Cane rods in all actions these days, don't think of them as old soft, limp sticks.

This year I offered clients guiding with cane and silk, cane rods and silk lines, people are really suprised how well it all fishes, some times it makes you wonder how far forward we have come, I have a Hardy that has a very tippy action, Alex Martin that is more of a mid action and a lesser know which is really soft ( which isn't my cup of tea) the one I like best is a special built Italian rod by Alberto Poratelli, all hand made, in totoal 60hrs of work, one nice feature, no brass ferrulles, all in bamboo.

By the way Brian the rod looks lovely, a joy to use I bet.

hmmm . . . . it's always going to end up as subjective.

I've got a few bamboo rods, some as stiff as telegraph poles, and my once 'go to' user, a Hardy Graphite; none have the soul and warmth of this little stick!

Mick, if you ever find yourself in the Pennines, East of Manchester you're welcome to wave some of these 'old fashioned' rods about.

Brian

edit: Andrew, an absolute pleasure to use
The great thing about Tims rods is that he guarantees that they will catch fish and make the owner sexually attractive to supermodels [Terms & Conditions apply]

Beautiful looking rod. I have great admiration and not a little envy for craftsmen like Timmy
As you said Enigma, "warmth and soul" sum it up perfectly.
