This question, in a round about way, is a classic case of the recent threads questioning rod costs.

The rod is an old greys that hasnt been sold for a number of years - I dont know the original cost but in todays prices obviously you wouldnt get a new greys rod for 30 quid - so theres a start.

Bearing that in mind - unless youre planning to sell it on - is the guide cost relevant? - I would try it, see if you like it, and decide whether it is worth spending 30 quid of your cash on - if it is buy it - if its no good - dont. It might only be worth a tenner to someone else, but if it casts like a dream and fits your hand like a glove - its worth what its worth to you!

Maybe my question is misleading... i am aware of the cost of greys rods, however, it may be that it is an old glass rod, something that i would not be interested in using or purchasing, a local shop to me has a hardy glass rod for peanuts ... i wouldnt buy it for the same reasons.

The chap who offered ti to me is a sea angling aquaintance from another site... he is too far away from me to have a look and chuck which is why i begged the question here...

I remember a salmon Kielder up for auction last year with Mullock & Madeley, was described as carbon in the catalogue.

"A Grey’s, Alnwick “The Kielder” 15’ 3 piece carbon salmon fly rod, grey blank, low bridge guides, whipped black, tipped red, spigot ferrules, keeper ring, #10"

Sorry I can't find the old add but if you try Google Images it brings up a piccy of the salmon Kielder.

Had a Kielder 9ft aftm 6/7.it was an unscrimmed blank and was their entry rod some years back.Middle to tip action.£30 in good nick seems quite fair.

I am sure I had a 12ft ~5-7 model, it was as floppy as a rod made from a tank aerial and so I sold it. Very old rods, can't imagine they would compare to anything produced today.

The kielder was a soft actioned rod, i think it was one of the first rods greys done, i bought the northumbrian and that was ok, very soft actioned again though, the ones to look out for are the colarado and the grand prix (gpr?) i could not afford one at the time but i tried one out and they were excellent, the grand prix was a cracker and the colarado was an excellent river rod.

For £30 i would snap it up though, even if you dont like it it may become worth a bit more in the future!

I am almost certain that the Kielders were built on the Fibatube series of blanks which were one of the standards about 20 years ago. Lots of rod builders used them: Greys, Hardy, Dicksons amongst others. Horrible in longer single handed styles to my mind but still well used in salmon fishing circles for afficiandos of the older slower salmon rods. They were good rods in shorter lengths and very robust.
