Re: I Need A Really Big Heavy Reel........
Have a look on Jim William's site (Just Reels) on the second hand list.
He sometimes has some very good sea reels at quite reasonable prices, and in his last newletter has knocked hundreds off the previous prices.
I was going to suggest SpeyCo reels but they are also click and pawl.
I think I saw a big Abel 5 going on eBay this weekend past for little money.
Of course there is also the German dual mode Henschel reel which will handle a King no probs, and he has now moved his distribution to ebay.
Cheers,
Steve
From Jim's site:
Emery Sailfish. This is the larger of the two Emery reels normally seen. I've heard that a bonefish size reel was done at some point, but I've never seen one. This one has a serial number high enough that this is not one of the reels that John Emery actually made. After his unfortunate death, his wife and son made another run of reels of this size. What that means is it doesn't carry the fairly high price that one of those that actually have John's fingerprints tends to carry these days. 4.35"x1.2" and 14oz. It'll hold a WF12F and a ton of 30# backing, probably in excess of 500yds. It was designed for pelagic fish, and I would assume it should hold a shooting head, short running line, and probably close to 1000yds of 50# PowerPro. All of John's reels were silent in both directions. This one is set up for LH retrieve and I'm not sure there's an easy way to convert it. The only wear, and it is minimal, is around the reelfoot. The rest of the satin black finish looks just about new. Excellent. LH only. NEW LOWER PRICE! $795.00.
Emery Sailfish. This is the larger of the two Emery reels normally seen. I've heard that a bonefish size reel was done at some point, but I've never seen one. This one has a serial number low enough that it marks it as one of the original Emery reels. These are reels that John Emery completely made before his unfortunate death. This one is set up for RH retrieve, and I'm not sure there's an easy way to convert it. The original Emery reels were known for their reelfoot that couldn't be trusted. Many owners who actually used their reel had this corrected. This one has been corrected, but truthfully the fix has some rough edges. When the photos go up I've shot a photo straight on the reelfoot, and you'll see what I mean. The only other negative is that the owner engraved his name in the pocket of the reelfoot. The rest of the glossy black finish looks just about new. Serial number is <100. Excellent---. RH only. $995.00.
Peaker Billfish. John Emery's reels were so highly thought of in their day that several attempts to clone them occurred. I used to own one of them, called the Summit. This is another one that I had never seen until this one arrived. The finish is closer to being a satin black, much like the second run of the Emery's that I've seen. Otherwise, it really is difficult to tell them apart. One improvement over the original Emery is that the reelfoot is dovetailed. 4.35"x1.2" and 16.1oz. That means it's over two ounces heavier than the equivalent Emery. It should hold a WF12F and 400-500yds of 30#. There's one very small mark on the end of the reelfoot, otherwise the reel clearly looks unused. The only negative is that the owner engraved his name in the saddle of the reelfoot. When the photo goes up it'll look like the ends of the reelfoot are bent down. Well, they are, but it's intentional, probably intended to improve the fit between reelfoot and reelseat. Excellent. RH only. $595.00.
