Default Is this reel broken?

Hi all

I have a reel which originated , like loads of others, in the far east, but marketed in UK/Ireland. Quite cheap, about £50.

Nice little thing, perfectly ok, but it spins forward if the handle is pushed - ie no check, even though it does have drag contraol when the line is pulled.

I dont have a line on it at present - would that have any bearing on why it would do this?

Even if you hold the reel in your hand, and pretend to cast, the spoon rotates forward somewhat.

The seller took it back recently and said something about replacing a rubber on it, but i couldnt hear him properly on the phone i was on.

Is this a common characteristic amongst some reels?

It would help if you mentioned the name of the reel I suspect it may be a Danica
this uses a rubber grommet as part of the drag,By the way £50 is quite expensive in my book, easker1

Many of the newer LA flyreels will freespin on rewind, this allows you to bat the rim like a centrepin reel for faster retrieve of line The Grays GRX and GTX can and do this. There is nothing wrong with them.

As Jim says

I have reels like this , if you find the line "creeping" back onto the reel when casting just catch the line under your forefinger

I would have thought the line would come off ather than wind on, when casting. It looks like some of those by Sunkistbob, but nothing to do with him. The price was actually about £40, which is solid in my books.

But you said the drag was working.Hence line will not pull off.

No no if drag working as you stated and the reel is "free spooling" FORWARD as you also stated then the line will wind/creep ONTO the reel .

If this is part of the reel design as I suspect it is then it is no drama , as I already said just trap the line with forefinger and it solves the problem of line inching back onto the spool , simples !

Yes Sweeney you're right , was getting confused! I guess the spool may not spin so freely with a line on it too. Other than that its a grand little reel and times are tough so i dont want to spend too much on gear. I spent enough on tying gear in the close season....
