Default How/why did that rod actually break?

Interesting vid on just how much 'pressure' you can put on a graphite rod ... and what it really takes to break that tip (short of your Auto door).

Yup............graphite blanks are real tough............BUT...........it only takes a very small dink (even a clout from a gold head can do it) to increase the stress levels sufficiently to shatter it...........from experience................birdsnest

I had a 13' 'explode' at one of the guide whippings. Had been fishing all morning no problems with size 14 doubles, so hardly likely to damage the rod, that's all that it ever did cast. It just literally disintegrated in a loud crack.

It`s already been mentioned that something as simple as a ding with a goldie can put adverse stress onto the blank, other problem which may not show up immediately can arise if the underside of the guide feet have not had the burrs removed when grinding down the top for thread. Those wee burrs can worry away at the rod over a period and then bang, no warning.

Someone told me that perhaps the guide was wrapped too tightly and this put pressure on the rod.

Surely not?

Slack line introduced into a backcast leading to a sudden load on the forward cast is an excellent way to break a rod.
Very easily done on a poorly executed Spey cast where water tension may increase the load significantly.

I must be the worlds worst angler for breaking rods I break at least two a season. My breaks are usually due to accident or carelessness. It's never the rods fault.

I have a new 14' on a Harrison coming my way in the next day or two. I'll try and look after it.
